I'm thinking about getting a new DVD burner I don't care if I have to spend $150, but if I'm gonna spent that much I want to make sure I'm getting a good one. right now I have a Lite On SOHW-812S I'm not sure if I'm happy with it, seems to not burn the - disc as well as the +, I've been using the BEST media you can get. Just wondering if this Plextor PX-712SA is good or not? any help would be great.

Thanks.

Soyo Dragon MB

I got a plextor 708A, works great. Go with the newest plextor the 716A (double layer). The 712 is not.

Before you purchase the Plextor PX-712SA you need to make sure your motherboard will support it.I have the PX-712A,and plan on upgrading to the new PX-716A soon.check out the prices here.

Does anyone have a link to one of these reviews for the drives? I have 150 to burn for a new drive, but I want the best reliability, not necessarily speed, you know? Thanks.

Here's the PC World Top 10:

Would anyone recommend against the NEC 3500A? It's around $70 shipped. Is there better for close to that price? I'm thinking about upgrading.

I Think I'm gonna give the Lite-On SOHW-1633S a try and see how that works out for me.

I made the same mistake in buying the Lite-on 1633sx (same as 1633s). NEC 3500 or Plextor have better writing quality. Have a look at the following thread:

Make sure you have up-to-date firmwares.

By the way, I'm using BS41, released last November, on my Lite-On 1633sx. It's supposed to boost burning of DVD-R to 12x and DVD+R9 to 4x.

I can't get BS06, released on 24 December, to update BS41. Does anybody know why?

Plextor is usually good but a bit overpriced.

By the way, re my own message above on Lite-On, apparently BS41 upgrades the 1633s up to 1653s and is more up-to-date. Despite the dates shown.

Check the following site :

Wild77, I won't argue with you because I like Plextor too, even though once in a while they come out with a lemon. I bought a cd burner from that brand some time ago and was very satisfied.

However, about 6 months ago the best DVD burner on the market for the price, with the DVD+R9 feature, was NEC 3500 and Plextor was overpriced. Now Plextor has become more reasonable, thanks to competition.

On the other hand I don't fully agree that you always get your money's worth. There is a minimum of course but the most expensive is not always the best. Read a few independent reviews or forums on any topic and you'll see what I mean.

Gswiss all companies have lemons.Sometimes you get a bad one some more than others.I have read a lot of reviews and Plextor always has had a good reputation.I personally have used five of there drives in systems I have built and never had a problem. No matter what brand you buy,use a reputable retailer or online company with a good reputation and return policy. That way if there is a problem you won'tget stuck with something you are not happy with.

I don't know about that. I got my PX 716 for $99.99 only because I got a $30 mail in rebate. You can get the 3500 for I believe $65 on newegg. But I wanted the Plextor.
