Ok, a problem evoked here several months ago has returned to haunt me. And as with the time I've yet to find anyone else with this problem nor a rational explanation for it.
In short my DVR 103 now and then burns ALL DVD-R disks (tdk, verbatim, sony, jvd, etc) without a problem at the standard x1 speed. Previously, it also burnt all CD-Rs (same brands and more) without any problem. Today, the CDRs consistently give me power calibration error messages at the lead-in stage.
Six months ago, I managed to open up the machine and swabbed off a minute(1mm)translucent smudge on the laser. It worked like a charm and I managed to burn a few cds before going back to to DVD burns (I rarely do CDs). This month same problem, same operation (although no smudge to be found) and I'm still unable to do effect CD writing. The only variable to the PCE message is that Nero will simply hang at the lead-in point (3% progress)when certain CDRWs are inserted. Only a reboot allows me to close down Nero and get the CD out of it cage.
The DVR 103 underwent its 1.9 firmware upgrade nearly two years ago. An attempt to v2.0 a few weeks ago was to no avail. I've got the Nec OEM model and I don't think it matters anyway.
Now a sherlockian comparison of the two modes suggests there might be something to the unique variable associated with this problem: 1xDVD vs 4xCD speeds. Media quality simply is not the problem. I'm willing to buy the worn laser theory that many here on the forum point to, but why then do I not obtain PCEs with my DVDs? Could a possible answer be found in the following analogy: a clogged or greasy ballpoint pen will manage to write on paper if done slowly enough and with sufficient pressure. Yet, if one tries to speed up the process the ball point simply skimps and scratches over the page without any flow of ink rendering the paper unreadable.
Months ago, Nephilim suggested a couple of programs that might allow me to write the CDs at comparable x1 speeds (e.g. fireburner) and test the reaction. But to no avail...neither were able to negotiate anything under 4x. If only I would start getting some DVD coasters, I'd be relieved enough to dispose of my Pioneer dinosaur and opt for one of the newer multi-format writers. But we're not quite there yet.
So....Do any of you have any new input on this matter. Thanks a million.
