AVI (MPEG4/DivX) problems

I have experienced problems using TMPGEnc. When I try to open the AVI (DivX MPEG4), I get a message that it does not support compress file(s). I used VirtualDub
to uncompress the avi and it was uncompressing almost 9 gigs!! toward the end I received an unknown error??? This happened twice. I was uncompressing to a NTFS HD with 20 GB available. First I tried it with FAT32 and received the 4 GB limit error. Are there some tools out there to transfer theses file(s) the DVD or SVCD?
P.S. the movie I was backing up is Spiderman.

spider man will fit on 1 dvd-r (movie only) if thats any help or are trying to get the extra's. I used dvd decrypter,infoedit,nero if you strip out all the extra streams it's around 4.4gig.

I have SpiderMan and have stripped everything that I could, but it won't fit onto one without reencoding. I would sure like some more info on how you did yours, because I am so close. By the way, you said 4.4GB. How did you do that? I can only do 4.36 or 4.37 before I get file size errors.
