I just purchased an iomagic 16x dual write dvd burner, which came with Nero OEM, but am having problems writing to a DVD. I have been reading a lot of the posts on this site about external burners and the problems people are having with them. I dont really know what solution I can start with first. A lot of people are having the issue with the error "scsi command aborted". Luckily I have not encountered this problem. While tryin to write a single file to a DVD, nero passes the simulation test successfully, but then fails to burn. I get the message, "failed to write at 4x". I am using Sony DVD-R's made in Japan, so i know they are of good quality made by MCC. I have had the same issue with Memorex and Compusa store brand. I know the latter 2 are horrible media, and so i bought the sony today thinking the problem was the media. Apparently it isn't. I am using Nero version 6.3.1.18 and firmware version B7C9 for my writer. Any information will be helpful; i dont know where to start. Below is my recent log info from my latest attempt at a burn:

you can only change booktype on DVD+R

i think the BenQ 1620 is one of the best drives you can buy right now (although not sure about the rebadged ones, but shouldn't matter)

bad, im not good with error logs, but i can tell you this, the first burner i bought from iomagic was deffective. i just got back from circuitcity and traded it out. to look at the firmware for iomagic drives visit :

http://www.iomagic.com/Firmware/FirmwareDownload.html

if you are unsure which firmware to use use thier live talk tool, and the Nero tool they have on the site, it will let you know what you currently have and the person on the other end can help.

i hope this helps, and i will keep checking back, so if i can help more me know.

thanks,
ross

hey guys thanks for the input.
sirenia: I also downloaded DVD Shrink and dvd decryptor from this site. Had no trouble decoding the dvd, but when i tried burning it, I got an error. This was with Nero installed. Maybe i should uninstall Nero and try using Decryptor then. What other programs do you guys suggest if Nero doesnt work for me? (For example, if I want to burn single data files, or music).
kchev: So for the booktype request option, what should i use if I am using DVD-R's?
rosspod: Yeah I think my iomagic burner may be defective. I just spent 4 hrs on Live Chat with a guy from iomagic. We cycled through a lot of things, like updating the firmware, updating my aspi layers, and reinstalling Nero. None of these things worked, and after all that he told me to get an RMA # and send the writer back to them for a brand new replacement. Hey ross, whats the return policy for C.C? I got mine from Compusa, and its already been over a month since I purchased it. Maybe my only option is to send it back to iomagic.

But before I do so, does anyone else have any other ideas to what might be a possible solution? Thanks.

You can use decrypter without uninstalling Nero, that way you can use Nero for music etc.. just click on the drop down box after hitting backup on shrink to burn using DVD Decrypter instead of Nero try that, also you might want to check your ide settings i found that it works better for me on dma instead of pio.

just don't change the booktype or try to leave it normal
not sure exactly how it is asking you though
what options is it giving you and what are you using to change the booktype?

yea i have the option to choose the book type request when i am getting ready to burn using Nero. Its an option i can choose when i click the "options" button next to burner i choose. The choices I am presented with are DVD-ROM, physical disc type, and unmodified. The default is DVD-ROM. If i choose either of the other two, i get a burn error saying "scsi command aborted"

you will have to choose unmodified when burning -R's because the booktype can't be changed on them
this is one reason people like +R's better
i personally have a buddy with an older Toshiba dvd player that will NOT play + or - discs, but WILL play +R's with the booktype set as DVD-ROM perfect

hey thanks for all your help guys. It looks like my writer was defective. I went back to Compusa and got it swappped for a brand new one. Now it works like a charm. I burned 4 dvds successfully! I also got the newest version of Nero, which has an option now for "default" as the book type request.

I wss able to burn 2 dvd movies, but unable to play them on my standalone dvdplayer. I used DVD Shrink and Decryptor to burn them, and Sony and Maxwell DVD-R made by MMC...i have a pretty new DVD player as well. Neone have any clue to why it doesnt read the burned DVDs? THanks.

bad, im glad compusa swapped it for you. usually its a no go without that upc. it could be that your dvd player only plays + media. try to search you model in google and see if a spec sheet pulls up.

good luck!
