Are they really worth getting (also, are they easier to mod; easier to use the non-mod chip methods on?)?

I've heard alot from alot of posts that they are truly pieces of shit. I was planning on getting one [I don't have any of the latest gaming systems (ie PS2, Gamecube, XBOX, etc etc)], but I dunno if I should get one now. I have heard that they have really shitty lasers and this n that, and that if you try to do that swap disk crap to it (taping down those things on the lid so that it thinks it is open/closed whatever) that it f***s up and doesn't run games anymore. Should I just try really hard to find the actual PS2s (the non skinny versions)?
