I'm looking to calculate what bitrate I can use for my DVD authoring... I normally use variable bitrate to encode the MPG files...

Can anyone give me some formulas or proggies to calculate the maximum bitrate that will fit on to my DVD+Rs

You need to calculate the average not the maximum if you are using VBR

The formula is simple: Divide 600 by the number of minutes of footage. The result is the maximum bitrate (video + audio). For example, a 90-minute movie needs a total bitrate of no higher than 600/90=6.67Mb/sec. Keep in mind that raw PCM audio runs about 1.6Mb/sec, and AC3 or MP2 only about .2Mb/sec. So if you used, for example, AC3 audio compression, your video bitrate would have to be less than 6.47Mb/sec to fit.
