i'm having difficulty burning anything with my new dru-530a burner. right now there are 2 drives in the comptuer, both on the same IDE connection. the other drive is an optorite 5205 cd-rw. both have the lastest firmware updates and i have tried both as master and the other as slave and also both on cable select. none of these configurations work. neither drive can burn unless i take the other one out. i have also tried the latest nero and the lastest sonic record now to see if the software was the problem. it is not the cable bc i have used it before with 2 drives and it both still work as long as they are the only drive. both are detected by the bios and both can read correctly, the only problem is burning. the motherboard also has the lastest bios, it is an abit nf7-s ver. 2.0. thanks.

Um, are you sure you mean 510a? The new Sony's for late 2004 and Jan 2005 are Sony DRU-710a. I might not come back to this thread because of a trip I might take... but if you could describe what happens when you can't burn it might help others figure it out.

this is what happens when i try to burn. the drive spins up and starts to write to the media. then only a few seconds in it stops with an error and the entire computer freezes for about 4 or 5 seconds. then it unfreezes for a few seconds and then freezes again. that freezing and unfreezing continues until i shutdown my computer or if i end nero and imapi.exe through the task manager everything will go back to normal but that doesn't work everytime. the same thing happens with the optorite drive and it happens with both music and data. i haven't tried to burn a dvd yet so i don't know how that would work but i can imagine it wouldn't be good. also even though it briefly shows its writing to the cd it doesn't actually do anything to it. and another note, the drive never spins down, it just keeps spinning and won't eject either.
i don't know what this is worth but here is the log created by nero.

just a couple side notes about the log.
yes i know that i have simulation turned on, that was how i was able to get the log without the computer freezing. i know i'm not using the latest version of nero that is because i tried reinstalling it and haven't gotten around to updating yet, but the SAME thing happens with the new version. if i need to update and create another log i'd be happy to, just let me know.

It would help if you enabled DMA mode on your burner.

ok, i wasn't sure how to enable DMA so i checked a couple places. i looked in the drive's properties in windows and that led to nothing. then i went into my BIOS and the Ultra DMA option for all of my drives has 2 options, disable or auto, and they are all on auto. i enabled Bus Mastering to see what that would do and had the same results as b4, same log. i don't know what PIO mode is but there was an option to change that between 5 different modes, mode 1 through mode 5.

thought this may help a little, this is the log from Nero when it successfully burns with only the sony drive. notice DMA is off but it still burns without a problem.
