There's a trick you can use where you modify the data on a memory card such that it boots a program off the card whenever you put a specific real game disc in the PS2 (you pick the game you want to use and inject some codes from the game into the card). Using this trick you should be able to get HDLoader running off a memory card and I believe you will then be able to load and run copied games off the hard drive. You would need a friend with a mod chipped PS2 to do the initial memory card hacking. None of our friends with PS2's have hard drives yet so I haven't been able to try this out but from what I've read it should work.

Most PS2 hacking sites have the guides and tools needed. One of my favorites is www.sksapps.net 'cause it has a simple, no b.s. layout, has everything, and doesn't require you to register to download apps.

If you have the Swap Magic disc you can also use it to load the program to the memory card to use the HD Loader. Also for the original poster even if you could do that why would you if you could just hook the Hard drive up to the pc via an extra IDE cable or by using a IDE to USB then transfer the game to the HD via a program such as WinHIIP this is much faster this way.

Yeah, WinHIIP is said to work very well. I haven't tried it though. Should be a pretty good solution for an unmodded console if you have a "real" HDLoader disc. Bit of a pain in the butt though.
