I just got this today and installed it. (carefully follwing the instructions) It says on the box and on all the internet sites about it that it can burn dual layered dvds, so i bought a three-pack of verbatim DVD+R DLs. Every time i put on in the drive, It detects some form of disc inside it, but it in the my computer window that there are 0 bytes of free space and has a total size of 0 bytes... It won't let me format the disks because it can't tell what kind they are, I've already searched for help on Sony and google, etc. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

Everything is updated

Oh yeah, I also tried to back up a movie, and it wouldn't write. I tried this on 2 dvd+r dls

Why are you trying to format a write-once disc?

Try installing an ASPI layer, that may do the trick. Here's a link to the download and instructions:

Oh yeah, I have a 256mb radeon 9800 pro (I'm sure-- I installed it myself, so I don't know why it says I have a 128. I had a 128 before the 256, though...)

The SONY DRX-710UL is the only DL external model that I know of. I dont believe I have ever seen a DRU that was DL.

Perhaps I just havent looked in the right place.

Will it recognize SL blanks? Factory DVDs and CDs?

Nephilim beat me to my question, have you tried to see if it will recognize SL blanks?

I thought maybe it was a +/- compatibility problem, but I did a search and the info I found on this model says its like my DRX external and reads/writes both.

Yeah, if by factory DVDs and disc you mean like movies and stuff. It reads Shuan of the Dead and the Big Lebowksi. It also reads Cd-Rs,

Have you tried burning to a single layer disc and if so what happened?

Yeah, It just burned a cd-r with no problem, but i haven't tried a single layer DVD. It'll probably be a while, though, since i'm pretty much broke for the rest of the month in the entertainment budget

Are you using software that can handle DL media? I have used my DRU-710A to burn several Verbatim DL DVDs with the TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6, and my Sony DVD player plays them OK.

I've thought some more about it and I wonder if i should have used the ribbon cable that came with the burner. I thought the one that i had in my computer was fine, so i used it. I might replace it tonight
Also, when i run Nero CD-DVD Speed and tell it to test the burner, i get an error:
Error - INVALID FIELD IN CDB (052400)

Anyone recognize this?

EDIT: Ok, i think it's a problem with the drive itself, because when i run drive check v2.01 with a verbatim dvd+r dl inside, it says that there is no disc...

YAY! I put it in another computer, where it worked. When i brought it back home and plugged it in, it worked just fine! I have no idea what was wrong though, as all the connections were very tight. Thanks for all of your help

What is simple gamma color correction? I use TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress to transcode my AVI file to an MPG file so it can be authored by TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6. I have read a lengthy description of recommended practices for VHS to DVD conversion, and the author stated that to get bright colors from VHS tapes played on his JVC VCR deck he uses a simple gamma color correction of +125. Well, I have a JVC VHS player also, so I went with a gamma of +100. It does seem to brighten up the picture when the DVD is played, but I was wondering if anyone has any comments about "fiddling" with gamma.
