Hi, I want to copy some music from a tape deck to my hard drive. My sound card has a line input, and I'd like a recommendations of a good software program to use to create wav files or mp3s. I have Roxio Soundstream -- will it do as good a job as anything else?

I'd like to use the lame encoder, and I have it with EAC, but it appears EAC must use a CD as a source. If I use Roxio SoundStream, I am forced to use its built-in MP3 encoder. So I need to find a program which will allow me to record an external analog source through my soundcard to my hard drive and use the lame encoder. Does such a thing exist?

OK, so I've answered my own question. If anyone else is interested, MP3 DirectCut will record from your sound card and can use the lame encoder, although it appears only to offer fixed bitrates (no VBR). Also, there doesn't appear to be a way to utilize Chris Myden's "profiles" like you can in EAC. Or can you?

At least Total Recorder can record, and Feurio! has a recorder too. It may be that you have to record to wav and encode afterwards, to benefit from the best LAME settings.

The old school is back. All hail the new http://BitBurners.com !

Just to be sure I understand...do you mean that I would have to record from my sound card to WAV files on my hard drive, burn the WAV files to a CDR, then rip the WAVs back off the disc with EAC/LAME to get the best quality MP3s? Sounds like a lot of extra steps. Too bad EAC can't encode MP3s from a file.
