First off, I would highly suggest getting a mod, but yes you can play cd based games on your slim ps2. Of course, all ps2 games now are DVD based, and yes you can play those to. You need to either use a swap method or get a modchip.

If you want a non-swap method, get Swap Magic. I would also suggest getting a flip top. I don't know if they make the flip top cases for the new ps2 versions yet, but they will soon if they haven't.

If you are thinking about getting a modchip, which I must say is 10 times more convenient than the swap method, check out http://www.steelcityelectronics.com/

This guy does some excellent work and has a 2-3 day turn around time when your ps2 gets to him. For $75, he will provide you with the powerful duo2se modchip and install it for you. I highly suggest him, look into it.!.

On my above post in the 2nd paragraph I've got a typo, I meant to say "If you want a Swap Method." not "If you want a non-swap method." My bad!!

the only way to play backups is to get boot-discs or a mod-chip.

http://www.swapmagic3.com

Get swap magic and flip-top and you can play all your backups
cd-r and dvd movies and games

How do you back up a PS2 CD game? Can you just use Nero, or do you have to use another program like Alchol 120? Will my Slim line PS2 play a cd backup?

For DVD use DVD Decrypter, go to the DVD Decrypter website for a guide on how easy it is to copy a PS2 DVD. Swap Magic is as simple as buying it for around $25 at a number of places, check the web. After that you need to get a way of opening your tray or flip top if you have the new slim line PS2.

Oops, I forgot that swap magic is very easy to use. I have the slim line PS2. All I do is I bought the Slim Tool with the Swap Magic. The Slim Tool is 3 small pieces of plastic which was pretty easy to install. After I installed them, all you do is put in the swap magic, turn on your ps2, wait for the screen to say load program, open the tray, and put in back-up copy, and hit the X key on your controller. As to where to buy all of this, I bought mine from www.modchip.com, the shipping wasn't the fastest, but I got it no problem.

Came to $37 US from www.modchip.com. The ship time was a little on the long side, but it did come. In my opinion the swap magic and slim tool are excellent. Although I have to switch out the disc, that is not as bothersome as some people say it is. It takes very little time, and you don't have to open up your PS2. I am very capable of taking my PS2 apart and putting it back together, but why do it when you have an option of not doing it. If my laser burns out like some people claim, all I do is take out the three little pieces of plastic. No one will ever know that I did anything to my PS2, so my warranty will still be intact.
