Hello to all again another post, I have a sony DRX-710ul and i was wonder if anyone would take plextor over a sony burner? I had purchased the sony and havent had any problems with it, I do backups of dvds to dvd-r's and most likely in the future will get into dual layer disc which both support. (I have an external drive by the way) So i am just wondering what most people would go with and if plextor is alot better than sony then i am willing to take sony back and purchase the plextor. Also how much better would one be than the other one.

As far as I'm concerned Plextor is the best you can get. The quality is unbeatable, they're quiet, they perform wonderfully and they last.
That being said, if you haven't had any problems with the Sony I see no compelling reason to take it back since they're a decent make but it's really up to you :)

Yes this is true. I have heard that plextor mainly specifies in computer technology, as with sony they are within different electronics. Do you think plextor just might out run a sony dvd in terms of lasting.
2. Do you think picture quality, errors, reduced skipping, pausing, etc. would be reduced if i went with a plextor instead of the sony?

Plextor does indeed specialize in optical drives and that's one of the reasons I believe helps them to be better than the rest. In answer to your second question all of those problems have more to do with the quality of the media you use than the drive itself.

I am using maxell dvd-r which i think is a good quality dvd, do you think verbatium disc are any better?

Maxell is definitely among the best but if given the choice I prefer MCC coded Verbatim by a slim margin.

Verbatim has different levels or "tiers" of media in terms of price and quality with the best being their DataLifePlus media that uses the Advanced AZO dye by MCC.
Unfortunately things can be very confusing when it comes to media. Some companies like Memorex buy from several different manufacturers and slap the Memorex name on it. The trouble is they sometimes buy good media and most of the other time they get really crappy media so you never know exactly what you're going to get.
Some of the best media you can buy is made by Taiyo Yuden and it will be advertised as Taiyo Yuden. The aforementioned Verbatim DataLifePlus Metal AZO is outstanding as well. Another good quality brand that is quite affordable is RiDATA made by Ritek - these are what I've used for quite some time.

And my last and most important bit of advice - buy from a reputable dealer when buying online. Some of the shadier sites sell fake Taiyo Yudens or try to pass off B grade Riteks as A grade. Thank you as this is helping me very much. Maybe you can help me make a decision that i wont regret now. I am now looking into printing with an ink-jet printer (epson rx-300) which i am planning to purchase unless i get negative feedback on the way im doing it or what im doing it with. But anyway i want to get vibitum dvd-r 8x disc datalife plus disc. Is this ok so far?
also another question would be which one should i go with they have one that is a regular printable or a hub printable (as advertise on there website) where it would print from edge to edge. My question here is do you think price would matter, and the above sites you mention have you ordered from them with no problems with the company as well as the media you had bought from them?

I don't personally use an inkjet printer for discs but I've seen the results and they're very nice. I've also heard very good comments for the Epson 200 and 300. If you run a forum search for Epson you may dig up a thread or three about the them. I think the only "negative" I've heard is the printing can smudge if you touch them before they dry completely but I don't see that as a problem if the disc is handled as any disc should be :)
As for getting the hub printables or not I imagine that completely up to you and your personal preference. If you give me a link to the Verbatims you're looking at I can tell you if they're the real deal or not.
I've ordered untold amounts of media and PC hardware from newegg with no problems whatsoever and the several transactions I've had with rima have been completely positive as well. Both companies charged a fair price and sent me exactly what was advertised. I'm a big fan of checking websites at http://resellerratings.com before I order and both newegg and rima have enviable ratings there. If you decide to order elsewhere you may want to check out their ratings and customer comments before doing so ;)

Ok so i Have looked at the two websites you have mentioned and pretty satisfied of the pricing. I guess i am within two kinds of media verbatim datalife plus inkjet printable, and since everyone else uses the ritek i have seen some inkjet printables on the website you have mentioned. Looks like ritek comes in 100 packs offering on .05 cents more a disc.Verbatim comes in at about .78 cents a disc and only comes in 50 packs. Verbatiums website is

I am located in the us. so im not sure if any problems would be otherwise resulted.

Both the Verbatims and RiDATA branded Riteks are very good media so the choice is yours although there are some very good deals on Taiyo Yuden that you may want to take a look at too ;)
Another suggestion would be to buy a small amount of each type that you're interested in and test thyem in your drive so you don't get stuck with a 100 spindle of media that your burner/firmware combination doesn't like :)

I have looked on newegg.com, rima.com meritline.com, and noticed that they all do have tiayo yuden, but i am looking for printable media. And i think i want the one with the white top but i think all tiayo yudens have shiny silver tops. Also i am looking for the hub printable ones.

i'm brand new to this dvd stuff too,which is why i say plextor drives work great,the guy at best buy actually told me he would use plextor over anything,not to knock the other stuff out there,after all i dont have enough experience to knock anything.plextor is very user friendly.

Many have said to stay away from memorex completly. Dvd +r may not work in some older standalone players and dvd-r are mostly compatiable with all dvd players. It is said to go with dvd-r unless you have all new dvd+r readable players. Hope this helps.
IF I AM WRONG CAN SOMEONE CORRECT ME..as i am just learning myself but i think im pretty much on the money with this one.

Im learning..lol..Ok so i had brought back my sony 710 and purchased a plextor for 219.99 at best buy.. Does anyone know if this was a good buy or would i be able to get a little bit of a better price somewhere else. I looked but seems that it is a little difficult to find plextor, (external drive btw) 716uf

I use the EPSON R200 to print on DVD's. The EPSON R200 and the R300 have the same Print engfine and resolution, the only major difference is that the R300 has a card slot reader and costs $100 more. If you do not print photos off a card buy the less expensive R200. On DVD's I use Ritek (Ridata) and ProDisc DVD's from supermediastore.com, good price great quality in over1500 ProDisc (silver inkjet printables) I have only had about 20 duds (some prob my fault)

What is the quality like of pictures when printing on a silver disc? I had thought white would give a better picture?
Would anyone else agree or disagree with me, as im still trying to make a decision of one type of media to buy and stick with.

thanks for info on memorex dvd+r's,i grabbed them anyway cuz i got them on a super sale,so far they've worked in every dvd player i've put them in,old and new, but they didnt work in xbox,but no +r's work in my xbox.i must have beginners luck!lol

$219.99 for a Plextor? Paid $59.99 for my Lite-On 1633s (dual layer, 16X etc.) and it's awesome. Just got it 2 days ago and every backup(so far) has been flawless. Using Ridata DVD+R's 4X with Decrypter and Shrink.
