Hi Wook,

Regarding your DVD-RW problem. I don't think it has anything to do with their being 4x, as I have exactly the same problem with Traxdata (Ritek) 2x -RW discs.

Whenever I use a DVD-RW disc that has been used in the computer (even when used to make a video DVD), the Sharp doesn't want to initialize it anymore. I found out that I could reuse such disks in the Sharp by performing a FULL erase on them in the computer.

Tell us if that works for you.

Operation manual states that DVD-RW Ver 1.1 are compatible with this product. It does not say that Version 1.2 DVD-RW are compatible. Some disc covers provide warning that use of Ver 1.2 DVD-RW in non compatible device may lead to loss of data.

Anyone think that a firmware upgrade will come along one day similar to the region free upgrade to allow 4 speed dvd-rw discs to work?

Wook, personally I don't think they will release a firmware for this problem. The DVD burner inside is probably not made by Sharp itself, so they would have to get a firmware for the burner from the burner manufacturer.

Besides I have never seen any firmware for this DVD recorder that you can download from their website. Why the hell don't they make their firmware available for download, they don't even inform you that a new firmware is available. My Sharp DV-HR300F had a lot of problems when I bought it (timer recording problems etc.). When I called Sharp and a few sharp repair centers about those problems, they told me many newer firmwares have already been released to correct them, but that I had to send my machine back. I asked them if I could not download the firmware somewhere and do the flashing myself, with a bootable CD. They said NO I had to send it back. Which I didn't as I didn't trust them, and all sorts of problem could arise from sending the machine by post etc.. A short while later, the shop where i bought the sharp sent me a letter telling me that they had a firmware upgrade available, and that I should bring my machine back and they would do the upgrade for me immediately. So I brought it back to the shop and they made the upgrade using a bootable CD from Sharp, and the problems (not all of them but the most significant ones) were solved. So what the hell is going on with Sharp ? Why don't they inform people about fixed issues, new firmwares, and why don't they make it available for donwload, or even send the CDs by post, like Pioneer does ? I don't think I will ever buy Sharp again.

I have read that a guy managed to change the hard-disk in the Sharp for a bigger one. And he said he was planning the change the DVD-burner inside to replace it with something better. So if you can find a burner that is compatible with your 4x DVD-RW and feel like experimenting, you can always try to replace the burner inside your sharp.

May I ask what is the brand of your 4x DVD-RW, and what kind of layer they use ?

The 2x DVD-RW I use are Traxdata, and they have Ritek W01 layer. I bougt them on the web, and it's kinda annoying actually that there are several versions of DVD-RW (probably the same for the other DVDs -R +R etc), because on the web, they don't say what version the DVD-RWs are. But when I look on the box of my Traxdata 2x DVD-RW, it does actually say version 1.1 on the back of the jewel-case. But on the cover box of 5 DVDs, it doesn't say, so it doesn't make it easy either for us to choose what DVDs to buy in a shop.

Furthermose, on Traxdata website, I couldn't find what version their DVD-RW are. But they have a compatibility list where they say that their Traxdata 2x -RW are compatible with the Sharp, but their 4x -RW (Ritek W04) are not.

The DVD media and burner market is a big mess !
Specific burner for specific media brand etc. etc....

Silver64, you managed to have your DATASAFE 2x DVD-RW work with the Sharp ?

A friend of mine gave me a bunch of his DATASAFE 1x DVD-RW, and they don't work systematically in my Sharp, or even in my computer. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Maybe we could make a list of what brands (and if possible the layer coating used - e.g. Ritek G04) work and what brands don't for the Sharp, so it's easier for everyone not to make a mistake when buying DVDs to be used with the Sharp.

Hi! I own a Sharp DV-HR 350S. After reading this topic I made a series of tests with disks DVD-RW EMTEC 2X and Traxdata DVD-R 8X. No problem whatsoever. I have the latest firmware and the device is performing superb! I have only one issue. I cannot make the device show me the clock! Any idea how to show it on the screen? Thanks a bunch for an answer.

Hi I'm new so just bear with me here. I own a Sharp DV-HR300U and I just tried the Maxell 4X DVD-R high speed dub and it didn't work. It just said there was an error in the dub and stopped dubbing. So I tried the same dub to a Sony DVD-RW 2X and it dubbed fine. Now after the dub I backed up everything off it, and initialized the HDD and decided now was the time to try to use the Firmware update that puts it to version 120. I loaded up the firmware update and set it up fine it started to go thru it but then it just hung and finally after 10 mins I just powered it off. Now I have a unit that won't even show video and I did press the reset button to no avail, so maybe its time to call in the pros, but before I do I'd like to get the forums opinion. What do you think, I fried the firmware or its something that could be handled with some knowledge I don't have. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Hi yankscool. I updated tonite the firmware to my unit to 1.20. My unit is DV-HR350S. Your unit is 350U. I downloaded the firmware from www.sharp.de. It worked like a charm. I would assume that you used a firmware for another machine. On that site it was specifically writen that this firmware is only for the S type machine which is European. Where from did you take the firmware? Give a look to sharp.de. There are some pictures there. http://www.sharp.de/softwareupdates/dvhr350s/dvhr350s.html. Was any of that on your screen?

You link just ends in a 404 error. But I dl the firmware for the 300 not the 350. I just ask who I brought it from the fax or email me the receipt. Then I'll call SHARP and see what they will do.

Hi all..

Just got my 350 today and I am impressed !!

I have 3 questions, I dont know if I missed this in the manual perhaps.

1. Can the time be displayed on the LCD front panel of the recorder, either when active or in standby mode?

2. I have the recorder connected to my satellite receiver and the TV to the recorder. When I switch off the recorder then the sat signal dies as well. Is there no passthrough mode through the recorder to the TV even if the recorder is in standby mode like a VCR?

3. Do you leave your recorder running all day? How does the HDD work, does it sleep after some time of inactivity?

Regards
MM

Hi! You did not miss anything in the manual. It is not the best manual ever. It's more on the worse side. Here are my answers.
1. No. I had this question too. I discovered that the only time when you may see the time is during timer recording. Though you may see on screen the time it is not very handy. You should press Rec list an there is the clock on the bar over the thumbnails.
2. You should connect the sat at the scart 2 decoder input. In this way it should not block your signal.
3. No. I usually use for recording the timer. You have an option to allow power off after 3 hours of non activity. It is in Other settings 1/ Adjustment/Auto Power off.
What type is your machine? Mine is 350S, european with firmware 120. It is quite impressive. Very good quality on SP and even on LP. Better than Panasonic.
I hope that this will help you.

Hi..

Thanks for the reply.
The time display is stupid. I would have liked to be able to see the time always, but anyway..not a showstopper..
I bought some new scart cables and reconnected it all and it works now, not sure what was wrong, but nevermind..he he

I also have the 350S with firmware 120.
It is a very good piece of hardware and I have no serious complaints.
The remote control feels a bit low budget but the fact that it works with my TV properly is a bonus, one remote less laying around..

The time shifting, recording to HDD, RW, R are perfect as well as the viewing while recording. My Camcorder also works flawlessly via the firewire port and I can even control it via the 350S remote, how kewl is that !!

I most definitely recommend this product to anyone !!

Hi Wook
Glad you got your supply of 2x DVD-RW's sorted out. I'm down from the UK to SYDNEY visiting my son. Had a look around Bing Lee and Harvey Norman stores here and most surprised to see how expensive the Sharp 300 is in Australia. Over Au$1000! I bought mine last year in the UK for GBP300. That's about Au$ 700! Anyway that's life I suppose and I'm sure it costs even less in the USA

Silver, one word: EBAY. You can't buy it in the stores here bc nobody carries it. Taking a look at Amazon.com reviews tells the story.

Hi!
Could someone explain the "Direct Rec TV" function (hidden under the cover of the remote). Apparantly this is supposed to be a "follow TV" function, i. e. pushing the button should initiate the recording of the TV show you actually are watching. My Sharp (300S) does not respond to this command at all. Have I missed something ?

Hi Wook,
thanks for your reply. On my Sharp remote the button is placed far down, far left under the flip up cover. I can live without this function.

1. I find my DV-HR300 can't record Nicam when using direct recording, it is ok when I first purchase, it is also ok when using timer record. I think what I've done different with other persons was that I've initialized the hard disk. Is there any wrong config? How I can set it to factory default? I try to reset it but only the time/date is cleared.
2. Also, I find that High speed dubbing is impossible for timer record programs but it can if I select a direct recording program. Anyone has same experience?
