ok, I am kinda new at torrents and stuff, I am not completely sure how they work. But I have an idea. I am realy frustrated about this..
ok first off.
I have NO firewall.
NO router.
NO anti virus software.

And I do have 512kbps DSL Internet speed. With AOL.

I am downloaded a game, I downloaded the torrent file and it started downloading the game at a wopping 800kbps, it gradualy went u to that.
Then when it got to around 33% done, it put the brakes on. And it started going around.. 30-50kbps. Sometimes slipping down to the 20's.

I am using Bit Tornado.

At this point in time it is downloading at around.. 0 - 2 kbps

And uploading 11kbps. I will tell you the information I can see..

Connected to 10 peers .. ( total speed 12 - 16kbps )
Connected to 1 seeds also seeing 0.929 distibuted copies.

wtf does that mean?

The download is 92.9% completed. Why is it slowing down so much NOW. I have the greenlight. As I said.. no firewall bla bla bla..

I have my bit torrent settings on dsl/cable fast

with my upload rate at 100kbps and max uploads at 30.

Yet the upload is going at 0kbps. And my download is now going at 1kbps. But not for long, it will go back to 0.

I dont get this.. for what was estimated to be 7 hours, is now going to be another 24 hours.

I started downloading it yesterday morning at 8am.

How the Hell do I speed it up. I no there are 100 threads like this but none of them really make sense to me, so I thought I would make my own.

If u cant tell me how to speed it up, can U tell me what settings I should have it on? and explain the way bit torrents work.. like seeds an stuff.

Thx alot.

ok, first off - get a godamn firewall!!!

secondly 512kbps = 56-60kbps maximum speed

thirdly, get antivirus software!!!

Connected to 10 peers .. ( total speed 12 - 16kbps )
Connected to 1 seeds also seeing 0.929 distibuted copies.

means their is only one person with the completed file and their are to people downloading it from him, so that means it will go slowly, how many seeds were their when you started?

Why?? at 512kbps the maximum upload speed you will probably have is 256kbps = 29-30 kbps and you definately shouldn't have it on 30, put it on like 4 max uploads per torrent

ok, now my upload speed has shot up to around 80kbps and rising. Is that good? I am still downloading at like 1kb. and the light has gone blue. Edit:: It is now at 100kbps, which is the max it can go. Why has it suddenly shot up? what are the benefits of this. SHould I increase the max upload to over 100 so it can rise ?

EDIT::::: ok, this is wierd.. I downloaded Azereus and I started dling wiv it. and at the same time still using bit tornado...

Bit Tornado is downloading at 0kbps and uploading at 100kbps.

Aezereus is Downloading at 127kbps and UP loading at 0kbps.

They seem to be working together.. one is uploading fast and one is downloading fast.

What is this?

However. I know hwat will happen. sooner or later they will both slow down.. and then the expected time of arrival will be 30 hours. In which case I will close one of the clients. this is a pretty slow to reply forum btw..

but thx for your help and keep it coming.

i recommend you to use bit tornado as azzeurus kills rams.

if your upload is faster then your download i dont know what dat means but what i do know is that what -LoNeR- said was right, get a firewall.

Huh!?

Ok...where to start....

Step one.
Firewall, at the very least get the free one from:

http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/comparison.jsp?lid=ho_za

Step two
....Antivirus....free one here:

http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10342876.html?tag=lst-0-2

Step three, take a good look at what you just installed and familiarise yourself with them. Both of the above sites have support forums of their own.

Step Three
Nice and easy client....er....bittornado for example (suggested by ninja)

h**p://www.bittornado.com/

Limit upload bandwidth to 80% of whats available to prevent choking your own connection.

Lots of patience :o)

Good luck

Oh Yeah, turn around time here may be slow for many reaosns, the most common of which is time zones. Dont forget your getting help from all over the planet, and some of us might be in bed.

:o)

i explained that you dope, 1 seed = 1 person uploading the file 10 peers means ten people downloading the torrent, you complain about this being slow yet u don't even read peoples godamn replies??

secondly, me and the people on this forum do this out of our own generosity - we don't get paid & we don't expect to be insulted by n00bs who don't know a f*ckin thing, get some respect lad!

are you sure it is actually uploading at this speed? with your connection it shouldn't be able to & your max download speed (as i said in my previous post) should only be about 56kbps.

Ok, I give up. You are obviously intellectually superior to me, and everyone else here.

Tell you what....Forget the firewall, and the antivirus.

Take a good firm hold of the mouse and cram it good and hard!

I know, but it was. I dont know how though.

Is htere a chance in hell that the download might just speed up past 15kbps to finsh the 6% more needed !?

Just 6 stinkin percent ! eta in 20 hours +

Thing has been downloading for 18 hours and uploaded more than 2gb.

Whats the point in uploading ?

800bits......yeah....kb...not a chance

ok....er....

Whatever you do, don?t use any of the following ports for torrents, ISP's are getting smarter and restricting bandwidth on these ports.

Direct Connect 411 - 413
Kazaa 1214
eDonkey 4662
Gnutella 6346 - 6347
WinMX 6699
BitTorrent 6881 - 6889

I recommend using a group of approx 10 ports (ish, one for each torrent) in the range 49152 through 65535, don?t forget your port forwarding (if you have a router, and yes, I know you dont) else torrent tracker may well reject your connection request. Some will also block you if you are using ports in the banned / restricted bandwidth range.

Very fast DL speeds (connection permitting, with proper config), don?t forget to seed else your share ratio looks like kaka and you get banned.

XP SP2 put a restriction on the number of simultanious outgoing connection attempts reducing it to 10. No fkin use to anyone but there are plenty of patches available on the net that increase it to 50 (more would just cause further problems). Worked fkin wonders for me.

BTW, considering your using AOL, your lucky your getting anything.

800 bits.. I dont think so, even if it was, it was downloading at the speed of light.

My share ratio is 2.354 :-) in green. So thats ok.
I am connected to 1 seed. With 13 peers.
So I am downloading off of 1 person, and 13 people are downloading from me, well goodluck to them!

It is listening on port 59367

Is that ok? Thats defualt, I dont know how to change ports. And If I do, will it carry on downloading from where it is now?

Whats wrong with AOL -- > Bit torrent ?

Just my luck .. -.-

= 1048576/8796093022208 terabyte
= 1048576/8589934592 gigabyte
= 1048576/8388608 megabyte
Megabit = 1 Megabit
= 128 kilobytes
= 1024 Kilobits
= 131072 bytes
= 262144 nibbles
= 1048576 bits

your max connection speed is 50% of whats shown above.

To achieve 800Kbps your would require a 7MegaBit connection.

800k

kilobits...?

800Kbits = 0.095367 Megabytes
= 0.8 Megabits

Still pushin it on a 512 connection.
Quote:
callisto u dont belive in god
is that relevant?

Find a bandwidth speed test site, check results, post here if you still think you have a lightning connection.

I have a 4Mbit connection (8x512) and get 460 Kbytes if I'm lucky.

Do the math

cos thats how the network works, if you don't share - you don't deserve to be part of it.

im sick of clarifying this, they don't restrict connections they restrict half open connections.

1. no their not downloading of you, their download of of you & the seeder & the other peers, your sharing bandwidth.

Yes, I know that, and you know that. Just didnt want to invite the 'whats a half open connection' question from someone who doesnt even know if they have a router.
