Hi all

Wasn't sure if this was the best place to post this but here goes:
I'm having problems with my DVD burner, whether burning data or more importantly DVD video files. My drive is a MSI DR8-A2 and I've got the latest firmware installed. I'm using Nero v.6 and have all the updates etc installed there. I've got no virus that i can detect on my pc.

The problem is: when i come to burn, instead of taking 15-20mins to burn a 4.6gb dvd (DVD-R or DVD+R) it is taking over an hour at about 1x spead. I've tried a variety of brands of media and checked nero drive speed etc. If i burn a CD-R it is fine and will cope at 40x speed.

Also when completed the quality is rubbish with lots of 'jumps' in the movie and 'freezing'.

Any ideas about this would be really helpful.

We need more info ....

1. What type of media your using
2. internal or external drive

is Nero the only program you have tried ..... possibly your drive is set to PIO mode instead of UDMA which is what you want ..... there is a couple of threads running about how to check.

Its an internal drive.

I'm at work at the mo so i'll check if UDMA or PIO when i get back.

It was working fine unitil recently using the same media I am now. I'm using TDK 4x DVD-R which were fine before. On the MSI website it says this media is tested ok. I've tried Sony and Emtec media plus some cheap ones.

During burning the buffer level jumps form 38% to 90% constantly??

Havn't tried any other burning software, i'll load on Pinnacle tonight to see.

You need to make sure you drives are set to DMA mode here is a link that shows you how to do it

Cheers guys that sorted it, it was set on PIO.

How does it end up on PIO then when it used to be DMA?

Sometimes, if windows detects transfer errors, it will decrease the transfer rate down through DMA variraibles (what your drive should support) ultimately to PIO (will work, ish, but runs like a pig)

Keep an eye on it as it may drop again.
