For example if you are recording from a VCR tape that has macrovision incorporated this will remove it allowing you to record it.

So disabling Macrovision would only benefit me if I were recording from VHS to DVD right? I wouldnt be able to back up my retail DVD's?

Thanks,

You can back up your DVDs in the normal way on computer or by DVD player to DVD recorder providing you have a gizmo to remove macrovision.

I have installed the hacked firmware for ILO which is said to disable Macrovision, so by disabling Macrovision I am able to back-up my VHS to DVD but not DVD to HDD right? But if I were to purchase a PPV movie from the satellite then I could burn to DVD or HDD, but if I didnt have the hacked version firmware installed I wouldnt be able to record the movie from the satellite right?

Thanks again,

Disabling the Macrovision allows the unit to record an otherwise copywrite protected media. PPVs are not protected as of now.

If that is the case I should be able to back-up my retail DVD movies right? DVD's are copywrite protected right? or do they have some other kind of protection?

Thanks,

Retail DVD movies have both 1) Analog Encryption (Macrovision) and 2) Digital Encryption (prevents us from copying the data files to a hard drive or onto another DVD disk). You can create backup DVD's a number of ways...

A) Consult the forums about DVD Ripping. You'll need a
PC, DVD burner, and about 10gb of free hard disk drive
space. The DVD Ripping forums will cover the software
you would need to decrypt.

B) Get a videocard for your PC. Videocards will typically be able to overcome Macrovision. Consult the
forums for specific video card recommendations.

C) There are stand-alone boxes that will strip Macrovision off of a composite video signal and regenerate a clean signal so that it can be recorded by
a DVD-recorder or any other recording device. Again, please search the forums.

DVD decrypter defeats Macrovision.
