Here's my config just so there are no questions... :)
Intel P4 - Asus P4P800se MB
512MB DDR
Dual 80GB Seagate SATA HDDs in Raid 0 Array
Sony DRU-500A DVD±RW Drive with newest Firmware (Supports 4x DVD±R Burning)
Using Legacy DVD-Rs
Shrink 3.2
Nero 6.6.0.8

Anyways here is my problem. Just recently I have noticed that when burning ISO's (DVD ISO's from DVDShrink) My time taked to complete a disk has increased two fold. A 4x burn normally takes ~15 mins to burn on my drive. Just recently I have noticed it is taking ~30 mins to burn a disk at 4x (Yes Nero still says its buring at 4x). In fact when I first start a burn, Nero estimates that it will take ~15 mins to complete. Nero continues counting down until it hits 00:00 in which time it will stay at 00:00 until about 20-25 mins when it will calculate another 10 mins left to burn. I haven't changed media recently and I have about 50% of my Legacy disks left. I just noticed it was doing this today and I dont know exactly when it started but I have been using the same media for some time w/o any problems and I know for a fact that when I started using these disks it took no more than 15 mins to complete.

Anyone have a clue what's going on here?
Thanks in advance for any help... :þ

hmmm... not sure then. same media and you havent tweaked any settings lately?

maybe clean out your burner... every now and again i open the tray and give a good blow into the mechanism.. it strangely seems to help

it also depends on the size of the original disk... sometimes some disks are 3.5 gig and others are full disks... but that is stretching it really :)

maybe try defragging your system...

also check for spyware (adaware is a great tool for this type of thing - and free)

check for AV progs - some of them can slow down file transfers

how full does the read buffer get?

Just ran Adaware, cleared a few tracking cookies.
Defragging shortly.
Used Read buffer @ 100% throughout
Write buffer hovers at 97-98%

dunno them mate...

check your IDE/SATA cables in the machine... if coming slightly out it will slow the IDE bus down a lot...

defrag might solve tho...

ok!

it may also be worth checking the processes running whilst burning a dvd...

if using win2k+ ctrl + alt + del and open task manager - processes... whilst burning only Nero should really be doing anything i would expect

I started to get this phenomenon a few months ago. I still haven't figured it out. Sometimes I get a 4x in 15 minutes. Other times it takes twice as long. The media remains the same. Have you tried letting Shrink do the burn with Nero for you ? I think I found that Shrink did it correctly.

I had that problem. Sort of. My read buffer would hang around 50% for the whole burn and would take a half hour for a "4x" burn. I fixed it by uninstalling and reinstalling Nero.

I think it's strange that your buffers are full and it's still doing this.

Did you try that? Probably not the solution, but it's good to start simple.

I just tried to have DVDShrink run the buring directly and I get the same 30 min burn at 4x. So, no luck with that.

Have you tried DVDDecrypter to do the burn ? Here is my original topic...

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/124876

Note that uninstalling Nero properly requires a lot more than you think.

You know it was very interesting after reading that tread and seeing all the warnings about Nero conflicting with other software I thought of something. I wonder if this started happening around the time I installed DVD Decrypter (didnt need it before last week or so)?
I am going to try a few things tomorrow including the removal of DVD Decrypter and a reinstall of Nero. Will inform.

Thanks again yall.

Whoa...
I noticed this same exact problem over the past few days and was comforted to see I wasn't alone... not only were my burning speeds more than doubled (audio discs that would burn in 4 minutes at 16x were taking 8-9 minutes and videos that would burn in 15 minutes at 4x were taking over half an hour) but my computer was also running very very sluggish whenever I would engage a burn... a problem I never had before.

I came across this suggestion and I am back to burning as good as new with my Sony DRU-500A and Nero 6.6.0.8 (is it safe to assume you are running with WinXP?)

Go to CONTROL PANEL -> SYSTEM -> HARDWARE -> click on DEVICE MANAGER...
Find the IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS section and expand the list (it should now show 3 items) double click on the PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL -> click on the ADVANCED SETTING tab... if it says PIO in the CURRENT TRANSFER MODE you found your problem! Now check the same with your SECONDARY IDE CHANNEL.

Now let's fix it...
Back at the DEVICE MANAGER -> IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS section... right click on PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL and select UNINSTALL. Confirm to continue, but DO NOT RESTART THE CPU AT THIS TIME.
Repeat the same uninstall process for the SECONDARY IDE CHANNEL... this time restart the computer.
This will force Windows to automatically reinstall the IDE drivers.
Then restart the computer again and you should be good to go.
Like I said, I had the same problem you described and this worked like a charm.
Hope it helps!

(Thanks goes to posts at www.cdrinfo.com and www.gidforums.com)

BTW...
I also use DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink and now that I have used the above method, I cannot find any conflicts between the two with Nero.

I hope you see my suggestion and that it works for you before you go uninstalling the other software.

I went ahead and took MrWalkers advice and uninstalled the Primary and Secondary adapters. This unfortunatly did not fix my problem. :(
After Windows reinstlled those drivers I noticed that the current transfer mode in device 0 had changed from PIO only to to ultra DMA-2. This unfortunatly did not fix the problem. I then went and fully uninstalled Nero (even using the suggested clean tools) and reinstalled nero 6.6.0.8 and I again am having the same issue...

Anyone have any idea what this could be?

Your drive may still be stuck in PIO mode.. If you could copy and paste your last Nero log that could help so we can tell what we are looking at here..

Thats a lot of memory in use are you sure there is nothing else running in the back ground while you are doing your burns? You did say you did a defrag right?
You could try ubdating the firmware for your DVD RW also by going to Sony's website and downloading the newest firmware.

Yeah I had alot of things going during that burn. I dont normally have that much, but right after I made that post I successfully did a 15 min 4x burn and I only had 81 MB of RAM free for that one. I thought that purhaps all was fixed but the next burn I did was 30 mins again.

This is really driving me crazy.

Yeah BBmayo, I did do a defrag and I am using the newest firmware for my drive.

What processes are running during your burn? I had similar issues and it turned out that it was a bug in WIN XP totally unrelated to any burning programs that was reeking havoc on my system. Just a thought but I would be interested to see those processes...
