I just got a Sony DRU500A. The media I ordered separately hasn't come yet, so I have only had the DVD+RW that came with the drive to experiment. So far I have been utterly incapable of producing something that will play in anything but the DRU500A.
I gave up on trying a rip so that I could eliminate that as a possible cause of problems. The last few attempts have been just putting some videos (AVIs) I had on my hard drive onto the DVD+RW.
I've used several programs as well. Nero, MyDVD (came with the drive), DVD Decrypter, etc. The DVD+RW always gets burnt successfully, and it works fine when I play it using PowerDVD on the computer with the DRU500A.
Then I try it in 2 standalone players: a Sony DVP-S330 and a JVC ??502 (can't remember the letters right now). According to www.dvdplusrw.org and www.vcdhelp.com the S330 should play DVD+RWs (the JVC is not listed). Also, I've found posts on this message board indicating the same thing. On the other hand, some of the reports here and on vcdhelp say that the S330 doesn't play DVD+RW so maybe it is a manufacturing run thing.
I've also tried playing the DVD+RW I burnt back on my Compaq laptop using WinDVD (it has a DVD/CD-RW combo drive). The DVD+RW doesn't play at all. However, I was able to copy the files from the DVD+RW to the laptop's hard drive with no issues, so it seems that the drive is able to read the DVD+RW format. From there, I can "sort of" play the files off the hard drive using WinDVD. I say "sort of" because it plays for like 2 seconds, then pauses for 5, then plays for 2, etc. I get none of this stutter when playing the files on the other computer (from the HD or the DVD+RW).
Anyone have any suggestions as to how I can troubleshoot this, or what to try next?
Thanks.
