Writing from Sharp HD 300X back to mini DV???

I'm really enjoying the features of my new Sharp HD 300X, but can't seem to record from the hdd back to miniDV via iLink. I know my handycam (Sony TRV19) can receive a digital signal because I have taped back to dv from my mac but nothing comes up on the LCD monitor (or is recorded to tape). I can also send dv to the hdd via iLink so i don't think it's a communication thing.
Is there a formatting option I haven't found or is it impossible?
