Best 5.1 speakers for yamada dvx-6700

Could anyone recomend a good 5.1 surround sound package for use with the Yamada dvx-6700?

I purchased the philips a3.610 which was quite good but I didn't like the fact that when i listen to Mp3's (which is quite a lot) the two rear speakers dont work?
The audio setup menu on the DVD player is very confusing as I am new to this, maybe I'm not configuring it right but I'm convinced I've tried every combination.

Anyone else got this DVD player and a set of speakers and sub?

Since it's only a small room I'm also keen on getting just a 2.1 system, would a PC package work OK?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
