get a tower not a laptop as can't upgrade it as well. also don't get a dell or hp/compaq as harder to upgrade. might cost $30 extra for store to build it & working so upto you. are you confident enough to build it yourself???

yea, but the question remains is this a job for some skilled tech guy or can it be done by a determined noobie??

as long as you are careful, discharge any static electricity in you by touching the metal case, do an R.T.F.M.D.(Read The F***ing Manual Dummy) & if in doubt ask questions before doing something you might regret than yes a newbie can build their own computer.

The best PC's you see on TV or magazines can be yours for about half price by doing it yourself, knowing where to look and what to look for. It isn't as complicated as it my seem. For example,
can you identify the wires coming off the power button, and plugging it into the board where the manual says power button here. Not trying to be sarcastic but it can be that easy with a plan going into things. I did my first only 9 months ago, and getting all software to work together was tougher than thae hardware.

Determined is no problem.
Really building a PC is no major problem, especially if you buy most things retail boxed. There is nothing too hard about doing it, I mean i've done it, and I'm hopeless at anything regarding putting something together.
Most of my experience has been grabbed from people on the internet, so if there's anything you're remotely unsure of, ask here first.
The rule is really to go over the entire process in your head first, and make sure you know how to do everything BEFORE you start.
Late is better thab wrong.
To be fair, although I still advise some caution, I would say most scare stories about doing something remotely wrong are unfounded.
Almost nothing I fitted to my computer worked first time, so I realised my mistake and fixed it, no problems.
For you it should be the same, don't worry about it, just do it and you'l be fine. You should save a bundle, especially on Dell.

ok, thanks,as i said before i have never done this before..what parts do i need??? because as of now all i know that i need is a motherboard and hard drive ,and graphics card . oh and i am looking to make an alienware type computer .but without burning a whole in my wallet : )

Good memory that matches your boards type. Most everything is "dual" this and that nowadays so maybe 2 sticks of 512 or full GIG.

Sorry ddp i didn't understand that, I know I'm not really involved.
But anyhoo I'd like to suggest:
SKT939 Athlon64
Either an ATi or nVidia Chipset motherboard (i.e. preferably not VIA or SiS) obviously with PCI Express
X850XTPE or twin 6800GTs
Dual Channel 2048MB RAM (Kingston, Corsair, Samsung or Gell)
16x Dual Layer DVD ReWriter (LG, Pioneer or Plextor)
Western Digital S-ATA Drives (RAID possibility if you need more storage or speed)
Viewsonic Monitor
Dunno if ive posted anything before, but those seem the best choices at the moment.

Wow sammoris, that setup may in fact burn a hole in his wallet, not to mention his pocket, even before he chooses a processor :) It may not be a good idea to sli. Might be better to save some money and get one 7800 gtx...

Hey,
I was wondering what would be best to do with my old comp, im not really wanting to buy a whole new comp but thats what someone reccomended.
Ok heres my specs:

Ok, so ram i can pick that up cheap off ebay. Now video card that is gonna be alot of money right? and mobo and cpu what do you think? Also im in aussie :)

depends on what you are going to do with the computer as in games, word processing & surfing the net. also you'll probably looking at getting a new psu as yours is about 200 to 250 watt were as new psu is 350 watt & above

Ok, the comp will be for a couple games not much, downloading, microsoft office and internet. Its mainly so me and my sister dont fight over the better computer.
[EDIT] also is $3 good for a pc cooling fan? Like these theres small ones and bigger ones.

those are psu fans because if you look at the connector to the board it is a 2 pin whereas the case fan motherboard connector is 3 pin but 1 pin is not used if fan has 2 wires not 3.

Ok, well those are just an example, these a box in my local pc store full of pc fans $3 and it has big and small sized fans, just wondrering:) Ok so what do you think about my other post on what its for?

Man thats cool. except if i did get it i would pay the extra ten dollars for the 2800 instead of the 2600.
That equals $420.948 AUD :)

Nah, i live in a town, i think it would cost a fair bit for a comp at the local store. :(
