I got a letter from my ISP for uploading Hotel Rwanda. How about that! I didn't even know I uploaded it (only knew I downloaded it).
Someone wrote in an older thread in this formum that once you receive a letter you need to change ISPs or quit using BT. I guess my question here, is what is the worst that can happen to me if I continue? Perhaps I will continue to download music apps and porn and not download any "MPAA" movies... It's not like there are any good movies out there anyway!
I live in the USA.

The way BT works is by people uploading the same time they download and afterwards if they keep it at the upload section.
I say move ISP and continue using BT.

BT is all kinda messed up cause I know I uploaded a little bit of the file but probably not all the bits to the one person. So all the person receiving had to do was finish receiving regardless of whether I was seeding all the time. And then this person from MGM or MPAA could probably nail like a hundred people for seeding even a little bit of the movie.
But yeah, thanks, I should find some alternatives to switch. Hopefully Verizon will develop its fibre network soon.

Here is the thing that I found out...you can download as much as you want, however, you are not allowed to upload.
That is the little trick, because if knowone can upload, you won't be able to download anything.
My advice...and I do this all the time, and really don't like to, but as soon as you finish downloading, just throw the file in a folder you are not sharing.
Not the best thing in the world, cause you don't want to be a leech, but that seems to be the only answer....at least for me.

I know. Gah, I feel so violated. Well as soon as I get home I'll quit my BT until I can get a new ISP.
I think I left this monring with BT set up to DL the WinXP 9-in-1. That should be really nice for a final BT DL.

I know what you're saying there about leeching. When I use SoulSeek I only share with people in my userlist, so they don't ban me. And my dl folder is like 10gb while my upload folder is like 100mb. I feel bad but that's what I gotta go.
Oh, and since you got that letter are you still file sharing with the same ISP?
Unfortuantely I have only but two choices, cable and DSL (1 provider each)... and the DSL costs like so much more money per month, but I guess it has come to that...

Nope...sure don't, not that there is anything wrong with it, I just haven't taken the time to do it, since I don't download too many movies.

Yup...but usually the only files that people get off of me are the same ones that I am downloading at that time. As of now, I only download PDF files and audiobooks, I know it isn't much, but hey...keeps me entertained.

I don't want to say anything bad about torrent files, but MPAA and RIAA are really cracking down on them. Most of the articles you see about them usually involve torrents. That's just my opinion though.
So, we know you download, just when you do, monitor it and take it off a share after it is done.

Cablevision, it is an affiliate of optimum online. I live in NJ. I actually went to cablevision because I had had Verizon DSL and had heard that Verizon was handing out subpoenas. So I was really trying to get away from the problem that has come to me anyway.
one big problem was that I had an HDD failure and never made a backup. I kept wanting to, but I had no place to store a 160g backup. So since I lost so much, I have been downloading night and day to try and recup. I've done about 10g of mp3s in a week and probably about 30g worth of tv, movies and apps.
Thanks to 2 new 250g drives I can start backing up my new collection on a regular basis.

Well when u download from torrents u upload what u have downloaded to other people..Hence the word SHARING

Sorry to hear u have had a letter... What did the letter say exactly.. were u using peer guardian etc... U might be able to help us out so we dont get letters such as yours..
By the way i have a fibre optic connection.. Can they trace the ports the same way with this connection???

I have Comcast Cable internet and I have downloaded probably in the range of 100GB so far. I use Azureus for my torrents and everything I download I always upload until I have at least a 1.00 ratio (100% or d/l 4GB...u/l 4GB). I have done so much downloading and uploading of movies, music, programs, and games and have received NO LETTERS yet.

For some reason I thought Comcast was amongst the ISP who does not hand over subscriber information...that it's ongoin in court. Any truth to this?

People like you shouldnt be using file sharin apps your totally defeatin the object of the game, and if your uploadin while downloadin whats the difference you may aswell carry on uploadin because if they are goin to catch you its more then likely at the time your downloadin
you see all these people complainin about gettin slow speeds on BT its because of people like you , its all good to download what you need then stop just cause you got it, what about the rest of the people (for instance ive got to 99.9% on my download right now then the muppet left leavin 74 of us stuck on that exact point, funny aint it)
Anyway, my little rant over all ive got left to say is your ruinin the whole network i try to upload as much as possible, its only fair to give back what you take
Not aimed at you especially, just dont like the leechers
