Can burned EA games work w/Swap Magic

I burned Nba Live 2001 and I tried to load it with swap magic but it didnt work. The swap magic screen says that this is not a valid ps2 disc. I remeber reading somewhere a long time ago that we have to apply some patch but I dont know if that applies to swap magic. Are we supposed to apply a patch?
