DVDR04 - NO Sub-titles

I have tried two different DVDR04 machines with an original DVD. No subtitles. I have gone into the navi. page and also the audio setup page. This particular DVD does NOT have a subtitle option in it's setup. The sub-titles are always available to the machine if you tell the machine to display them. I have played this DVD and several others in 3 other machines with NO problems. Is there anyone out there that has experienced this problem? ILO tech help has been absolutely useless.
