nec 3520a makes my computer not respond

i am new to everything, and hope i've am posting to correct forum.

i have a dell dim3000 pent 4 w/ 512 ram. i have an external nec 3520a dvd burner.

when i turn on the external drive, my computer goes into a "not responding" mode. it usually happens while i'm working with my pinnacle movie editing software.

any suggestions?

other info: i also have an external hard drive plugged in (MDT) - but no problems with that yet.

it seems to be mostly the dvd drive.
