True, if the updated firmware is RPC1, not RPC2. (RPC1=region free, RPC2=locked)

You can actually do it with SmartRipper.

I bought a secondhand Notebook, and it was set to Region 2 and it's RPC2.

I have ripped many Region 1 and region 4 disc's without a problem using SmartRipper, and after region is still set at region 2.

But it is the only ripper I have come accross which will do it.
