USB to Mini-USB ... Are They All The Same?

I'm in the process of trouble shooting.

I am using a USB to mini-USB Belkin cable. The mini side is a 5-pin connector. I can connect and communicate with my phone. Although, some programs do not work properly. I have tried the same phone, cable and software on a different computer and the results are the same.

Technically, is the Belkin the same as the one specifically made for my phone? Is there a difference between the Belkin version and one made by Motorola?
