I just installed an LG Electronics GMA-4020B CDR/RW, DVD+-R/RW, DVD-RAM Multi Drive (2x write speed). To maintain the proper perspective, the technology is close to 4 years old, but the drive is brand-new out of the retail box from LG. The installation seems to have worked properly - there are no errors being reported, and Device Manager shows a fully-working device. I do have a problem, however.

My startup time soared from 32 sec to over 7 min. I've included the following info that leads me to believe the boot process is having a hard time seeing the drives on the secondary IDE channel, but I have no idea what to do about it. Both sources below show disabled devices (I think). I've run forceaspi and aspichk and attempted to enable DMA in the Registry using info from http://www.blackmaxpc.com/Guides/Enable_DMA.htm.

Anybody got any suggestions as to why this happened, and what can be done about it?

Thanks

I'm not all that knowledgeable about this, but what does LG say about whether it should be the master or slave drive? I see that you have it as the master and your Sony CD/rw as the slave. Could you try reversing them?

I'm sure you checked the jumpers on the drives to be sure one was set to master and one to slave, right?

I assume that if you didn't, you wouldn't have been able to complete the install. I've never tried to install both drives as master drives, so I don't know if the computer will automatically assign one or not, but you better be sure one's different than the other.

Check your jumpers and be sure you have them set correctly.

Have you checked that your secondary channel has been turned on in the BIOS and is it on 'auto detect'

Thanks, guys. Sorry I took so long to reply.

I removed the Sony and everything looks to be perfect! I forgot to mention that the LG also has a CD-RW drive built in -- I think I read somewhere that two similar drives on the same IDE Controller wouldn't work, and might even be hard on the system (one hard shutdown during this period). Do you know if that's true?

Not usually the case really, but you may have a system that seems to see both drives as a conflict.

I am wondering if it could be the IMAPI within XP (the built in burning software).

Just for sakes, it maybe worthwhile disabling this feature, right click my computer/click manage/click services and applications/click services and locate the IMAPI Cd burning services and disable it.

Have you tried them on seperate controllers?

ie, primary - Sony(slave) and LG Secondary (master) or vice versa.

I had already disabled IMAPI. I haven't tried the Sony on the Primary IDE, but I will at some time in the near future. Thanks for everything; I appreciate your interest.

Hi there,

I have the LG-4040B (4x) set as Master.
I have the Samsung 252S CDRW as Slave.

on the same IDE Channel, everthing is fine.
Is it the fact that it's beeing on the same channel as a SONY that caused the problem ?
