DVD recording problems with SONY

I have a DVD recorder/VCR Combo Sony DRC8295N. It usually works great but sometimes gives me an error while recording to DVD. It wipes out the disk and it won't recognize anything that was previously recorded. Is there any way I can get the previous recordings? How do I prevent this in the future? It has only happened twice in about 30 recordings but I can't recreate the lost files. Has anybody had similar experiences? Thanks!
