Just read about this DVD recorder Sumvision SV-1001

Has anybody bought this , used this player

any prices ?

I decided on a Liteon instead with 160 gb hardrive.

Hi wheelnuta

It is superb

Very easy to figure out and start using.

It can back up DVD's to hard drive and write Hardrive to DVD.

Plays just about anything you through into it and get this.

The first disk i put in was a region 0 disk which seemed to make the player multi-region from the get go.

Worth every penny

I have bought one of these and it seems great so far - except not possible to back up some of my old video tapes - trust disney to put macrovision on VHS tapes!

Anyway only real issue is I cant find a multi-region crack for this player anywhere - i think its fairly new to the market so if anyone uncovers it please publish here or at www.dvdhelp.com forums

yes but following the thread he is talking about the Liteon DVD recorder with the hard drive - the sumvision doesnt have hard disk - however has many features the liteon doesnt have and if i want to burn to hard drive i have a computer!

It does create DVDs from video tapes (provided they are not covered with macrovision - like my disney ones!! - no I am not pirating I just want to transfer my owned tapes to DVD so I can consign the VCR to the cupboard along with the tapes.

Anyway again if anyone cracks the sumvision 1001 's code let me know please

Hi gbswales

Sumvision DVD's are normaly muti-region.

A Dvd trick to remember is when you buy any dvd new, always play a region 0 disk first in the machine and then switch it off as many have a first played region lock on them.

As i say, my DVD player (Liteon DVD HDD) is now multi region through this trick

yes they tell me it is multi-region out of the box - however previous hacks have usually allowed the disabling of macrovision - I am not wanting to pirate DVDs just to transfer all my old legally owned video tapes to dVD and the recorder would not let me copy some - notably disney who use macrovision on their tapes - however problem has been solved by hooking up my VCR to my computer.

Thanks for your comments - mmm first view region lock eh what if the first disc you put in such a machine happended to be a US one!! No wonder we still need hacks. I feel in any case that companies should be required to release the engineers menu - it is part of the equipment they have sold you - what if you are an electronics wiz and want to carry out home repairs!

The DVD manufacturers are pandering to an industry obsessed with piracy (or should I say obsessed with protecting massive profits?) I can think of virtually no other piece of equipment that protects against a user making some illegal use of it - anyway I would argue that backups of owned material is NOT illegal use. Likewise with region codes which is another device to protect their interests - why shouldnt I legitimately purchase and bring back a dvd from my holiday in the US and play it on my machine.

While they keep prices artificially high and employ restrictive release to maximise profit they will never win the piracy war - still no doubt they are having fun dragging the odd 14 year old through the legal system - why should a kid in the UK wait longer than a kid in the US to see the latest star wars - its a global world now - what do you expect them to do when their US email pals have already seen it!!
