Just bought Sanyo DRW 500 and it will not record

I have been trying for a week to burn VHS-C tapes to DRW500. I've used DVD +R and DVD +RW media and it does not work.
Followed directions for set up. Press recored it records for 10 seconds, freezes says disc error and ejects disc or I have to unplug it to get it to come back.

Any help?
