I don't know if I have 40 Pin or 80 Pin cables on my drives. I assume they are 80 Pin (they say ATA 100/133 on them and they are shielded and thick, but is there any way to know for sure? Can Win-doze tell me?

80 pin cable has much finer looking "ribs" on the cable than 40 pin. Seems to me like most cd drives come with ata 33 or ata 60 cables (40 pin). If it says on the cable that it is ATA 100/133, then they should be 80 pin.

Hi there,

40pins

80pins

When you see them side by side, it's easy to see the difference !

I'll demonstrate my lack of knowledge concerning 40 vs 80. Why does it make a difference to have 80 pin? As I look at the pictures above, I can easily see the 80 lines, but the connection is still 40 (2 rows of 20 holes). I have heard the 80 is needed for faster transfer of data, but it appears to be like a bottleneck on a highway -- merging from 4 lanes down to 2. Thanks.
