nero problem help please

to any one whom can help. Hey i am trying to back up a movie and i am using nero. It has worked many times i have done it before. I am using Verbatim DVD-R 4x. When i got to burn the disc at the bottem it "waiting for drive to become ready" then once thats done loading it says "The Drive Is Not Initializing - perhaps due to a defective disc" I am currently running nero 6 but i have also tryed it on nero 5 neither working. If any one can tell what to do or more about it that would be sweet. Thanks

i'll jump in here as i keep my beady eyes on Verbatim stuff..
post your Nero log , it's prob in "c:\Program Files\ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log" or thereabouts
ps as you said 4x media, alarm bells started to go off - some of the 4x daralife are CMC media code - very bad
- billions of posts rating these media (ok berating them!); hopefully you're not using them, but if you are the Nero log
would give us the answers, good or bad..

i found the log but what do u want to know from it?? please elaborate. I also have some Memorex DVD-R 8x i got for cheap on sale, they do the same thing. A friend told me its my DVD drive but i put in a movie watched it for about a half an hour and it works fine. I then was getting bored so i tryed burning it again and i dont know what i did but as soon as the blank dvd-r verbatim went in Nero poped up and it worked fine burned my dvd fine. What the heck is up with that?????.

you need to post the section of log for memorex disc, and also the section of log for verbatim log, pls...
i think you've answered your own problem but i would like to see the 2 sections of log to verify..

Same thing happens to me, with the memorex disc. I bet you got the 50 pack that were on sale for 19.99. I figured its the disc themselfs that are bad and not your drive. NOw if there was some way I could get my money back, cause now I got a bunch of useless Memorex DVD-Rs.

not all verbatim are equal - we're still awaiting a log and the exact media you're using...

The only thing in that log that no-one should see is your Nero serial number. It should begin with '1A21' or similar.
If it's like my version of Nero (mine's 6.6.0.0) the log is added to each time you burn a disc. So.....if you wanted to post a section of log, just edit out the serial number.
But let me make this real clear. You have started a thread entitled 'Nero problem help please'. How do you expect ppl to help you with a Nero problem if you refuse to give some basic (minus serial number) info with which to help YOU with YOUR problem.
But hey don't take my word for it, do some searching, then you'll see that all that's in there is your serial number. I've only been in computers 18years (no hacking just earning a living)

if this was a DVD error log i would have said ditch the crap media. However as modern cd burners can almost get good results out of a cardboard circle, this should be ok :)

Now to me, this is bad. Coupled with DMA being off, your PC is about to start swapping - ie it's gonna use virtual memory (hard disc churn) which could well be what's trashing your burn. If this was a DVD it would definitely be the death knell as the read-ahead buffer would drop and kill the burn or more than likely complete the burn, but result in a skipping/freezing movie..
I'd close down as many background processes as you can to free up some more memory..

ok. i'm a little confused as to your suggestions. first of all, do i want DMA to be on or off. and, if on... how to i change it to be on? secondly, i know memory is most likely the main issue, because i only have 256MB as of the moment, but more will be here within the week ( thanks to stupid computer companies using memory that stores don't sell yet...) so, besides not having enough memory, and either DMA supposed to be on or off, you can't seem to find anything else that would trash the disc? btw, this is just cd's that i'm burning, and i got them free so i'm not too worried....but i want to get this fixed before i even try a dvd.

The difference is that I found out if DMA should be on or off in a few minutes by reading on this forum, and if I had not learned that, I would have at least learned how to Search Messages above to learn what I didn't know.

Uninstall your drive then restart and let Windows find it again then apply SP2 if you have Windos XP then make sure DMA is on. You can go to Nero for help and ask if they have available a new CDROM.CFG file for you. Your burner is probably not supported but you can manually do this and the directions are in the help file for Nero Burning Rom. As a matter of fact Nero asks that you send a copy of your CDROM.CFG file to them for all unsupported drives so that way they may update their files.

ok, i uninstalled the driver, and restarted. it found it, and reloaded the driver, but DMA is still not on. i know that it is supported by Nero, because when i had it installed in my old computer, it worked fine. so what else can anyone recommend? i tried downloading the Nero burning rom, but i couldn't because my connection is not stable right now. i suppose, if that will solve it, then i'll keep trying. thanks for all the help thus far, i just hope i can get this figured out soon.

Noticed on the log that the burn speed is 32x. Is that correct? CMC media, memorex - AAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH! They suck big time! Never seen a thread that is as disjointed as this. I want to help, but reading the huge amount of threads made me lose interset at an alarming rate!
Is your DMA set in your BIOS? This may be why you cannot get it to work properly. Many BIOSs default the DMA to off.
