On the back of an original. If the cd is blue, it is cd; if silver, DVD. Also when you rip the image, if it is more than 700 megs, then it is a dvd since it wont fit on a cd without modifications. You don't need a mod-chip. U kan get a flip-top or a slide tool plus the boot disks. I got a slide tool and swap magic disk(boot disk) from modchip.com. Best software is DVD Decryptor to rip disks and burn them. PSX requires another type of boot disk in addition to the swap magic. Don't remember the name though.
There is no way to play ps2 games on a ps1. If your getting the gameshark, get an old version. I remember the name of the cd u need to load psx backups, breaker pro is the name. The modchip goes inside the system. I recommend not getting a modchip if you do not have the soldering experiance and a steady arm. There is a new modchip though that snaps on, i've never used it, but i've heard good things about it called dms4. I think that's what it's called, but it's quite expensive. It also goes inside the system. www.modchip.com has some guides for installation. Also has guides for slide card and swap discs and other methods. The boot disk goes inside the cd tray like a normal game, you just need to use something like a slide card or flip-top to open the tray without the system noticing.
