OK long story but here goes, I built this computer not too long ago and everything worked fine up until about two weeks ago. The problem I am having is I can't burn dvd's, I can burn cd's but dvd's. You ask do I have a dvd burner? Of course. Did I make sure of the slave and master settings are correct? Sure I did. Well how about your burning program is it up to date? Yep. Well what cable you using is it 80 pin? Yes. Is windows updated with the latest updates? Did that too. I have been through hell and high water with this machine and can not figure out what the hell is wrong. I have wiped the harddrive clean and reformatted, reinstalled my burning program, switched burners, switched ide ports, pulled my hair out, and slammed the computer into the wall. Can someone help please?!?!?!?!?

Well you list most things, so why not start listing the basics..........

CPU spec
Operating System
Memory installed
Burner make/model
Burning program used - inc version
Media type and brand
What kind of data are you burning to dvd - ie data, video etc

...............PIO is no go, DMA all the way...............

Ok
CPU AMD Athlon 3200
Memory 1 gig ddr pc2700
Burning software Nero updated
OS Windows XP updated service pack 2
Media any....Phillips, Matrix, Ridata, Memorex, etc.
Burner Sony DRU 510a or SonyDWD22a
Trying to burn video
Ok I have tried switching out burners, and have gotten all firmware upgrades for DRU 510A, but the DWD22A is not supported by sony because it is a OEM burner. I will try to switch burners in other computer, but in the meantime what you think?

try using a cd/dvd disk cleaner but until tried in another computer, points to a bad burner as you tried almost everything & still no go

Yes, in that case can you post us the Log that Nero gives you when a failed burn is encountered?

BTW:If you post it, edit out the serial number which is at the start of the log, so others can't use it.

Also as ddp suggested, need to prove if that burner is causing the problem or not............

try using a different media brand i would suggest go and buy a
DVD-RW DVD+RW
and see if it records on them
i had a similar problem
boughtt d two disks and that did it i found my problem
i went out and bought new media and they were all not recording successfully they would stop like at 8 percent or so
i went out then and bought the old media i was using before and it burned all my movies and data on DVD-R's perfectly
it could also b your because u updated your bios on your motherbaord or because u updated the firmware on the drive or drives

Burner and/or Cable is/are bad if everything you've done is correct.

Ok it's been some time but I finally switched drives with a computer that I know can burn. And same thing the DVD/RW drive works fine in the other computer but in this one it doesnt do squat. Cables and everything are fine. But something someone said interested me what abouut updating motherboard bios? Seeing that this is a new motherboard I went to their website to see if there were any updates, and applied those updates. How can I roll the updates to the motherboard back? If that is the problem.

Well again, what do you mean, details of errors or a detailed explanation of what is/isn't happening would be most beneficial at thsi point................................????????

first tell us the name of the Motherboard u have and the bios revision number u are using
then we can give u a older bios, where and how to download it
if this doesnt help well then we can check what errors you are getting and work from there, by the way did u get a chance to check any other media to see if your burner records on those

Something I was taught at school.

'If it aint broke, don't fix it'.
'If it is broke, how do find out it is broke, because you can't fix it if it aint broke'.

A statement like 'but in this one it doesn't do squat' - tells me that it cannot crouch.

Hope you fix it, probably has bad knee joints..............
