Error codes when ripping!!

When ripping a dvd sometimes I get error codes that the sector cannot be read and have to choose to ignore the sector. I presume this is because the layer was damaged, anyone have any ideas or comments on possible solutions, or is the dvd ready for the trash.

How many tries did it have before saying it couldn't do it? (you can set it to as many as you like)

Polish the surface and try again.

and you are right, it's damaged (might just be dirt)

I have the program try twice before ignoring a bad read, and I always clean the discs before trying to rip them. Is polishing the same as cleaning, or is it a different process altogether? For my cleaning I use a kit that has a soft pad and comes with a spray, seems to work well without ever adding scratches.

I have mine set to try 20 times, last time I had a dodgy disc it managed to read the damaged section (you could see a big scratch) after 4 trys.

Cleaning/polishing = the same thing, although I use my t-shirt, I must get a kit.
