REALLY weird problem with not being able to burn cds or dvds...

I have a dvdrw drive that came with my hp computer (I don't know if the model is important, but I can post it if it's REALLY necessary). Anyway, no matter what I try to burn, it always goes up to 4% (in say, nero) and then says error, cannot burn, and then shuts down. It doesn't make a coaster, though, which is good.

It all started when I installed alcohol 120% a while ago, but I deleted it and deleted all registry entries and the problem still persists. A while ago, it was also able to burn data CD's, but now it can't even do that. I posted on another forum, and someone said that it was a software conflict (maybe alcohol 120%), and that I should uninstall all burning programs and then reboot and install only one. I did this, however, and nothing worked. I really think this is the problem, because I don't think it's a mere coincidence that it stopped working a while after I installed alcohol 120%.

Does anyone have any advice on what to do?
