I purchased the DVDR04 for $138 at Walmart and have been using it for about a week with no problems:
- Plays prerecorded DVD's and music CD's. Plays CD's with MP3 and
JPEG files as well as VCD's.
- Records HP+RW and Philips+R DVD's. Used HQ and SP modes with
good playback quality. No experience with EP or SLP playback
quality. Source has been TV programs recorded on TIVO. Used
TIVO "save to VCR" mode. No experience with recording from VCR,
video camera, or timer.
- DVD's recorded on the ilo play back fine on ilo itself and an
Emerson DVD/VCR combo unit.
- No "commercial skip" ability but you can set chapter marks from 5
to 30 minutes and use fast forward (2X, 4X, 8X,16X) to get past
commercials.
- Have not experienced the hum that others have complained about.
- No need at this point for the hacked firmware although the 3 hour
recording speed would be nice to have.
I will update this as I get more experience with the machine.
