hey whats up everyone...im kind of new to posting threads but i have been reading your guides and advice on burning dvd's for about a month now since i purchased the sony dvd-rw DRU-720A. I have done a number of things that were suggested in other forums which include updating the firmware, setting the drive as master, disconnecting my other drive which is a samsung dvd ROM, buying other dvd blanks (have used TDK 8x DVD-R's, and VERBATIM 16x DVD-R's which cost me a good chunk of change. I have used dvd decrypter, dvd shrink, nero ultra edition 6 express, burning rom and recode 2. I have also downloaded and used the drive check software from sony;s website and it has failed on a read with a TDK DVD_R, passed with a cd-r, and failed on a write with a verbatim. I can also burn cd-r's at top speed and they come out perfect, which is why i kind of thing the drive isnt defective. I know that a power calibration error could be because of the medium, but can it be anything else? and if its not, what kind of dvd blanks do i have to buy for this drive?
