Need help hooking DVD Recorder to Cable box

I have Charter cable, with a Charter DVR. The box is a Motorola BMC9012. I want to be able to burn things I've recorded to a DVD for two reasons (1 - to save some recorded sporting events, 2 - so I don't keep running out of space on the DVR).

I purchased a Magnavox MRV640, but when I hooked it up it never got the feed from the DVR. I tried using both the component and composite inputs on the MRV640, but it could never get the feed. Has anyone used this model of DVD recorder successfully for this scenario? If so, how did you hook everything up? Or, has anyone successfully used another DVD recorder for this scenario?
