can anybody help me,ive just purchased a dvd drive,a dvd rw drive,the latest copy of nero,but try as i might i cant fit a dvd onto a 4.7gb disc.am i just being thick?

Nope ur not thick,we all have to start somewhere.

1.dvd is not actually 4.7Gb even though it says it is.The magic figure u need to remember is 4.38GB +/- 0.02GB.

The process is simple to express but the in's and out's r more complexed.

Process.
rip the dvd (decrypt)into IFO/BUP/VOB
If the total file size is near(BELOW) 4.38Gb great.
This can be burned using nero UDF/ISO mode.

If the total file size is more than 4.38GB then extra processing is required.
Strip unwanted extras/subtitles/menus.This will reduce the filesize.If everything is stripped so just the movie is left and is still over 4.38Gb then u need to re-encode.
and then burn back.
tools required(basic)
ripping software - (dvd decryptor/smartripper)
process for stripping - (ifoedit)
re-encoding - (TMPGenc/c.c.e)
Burning software - (Nero,record max,instantcd/dvd)

U r in a big pond when u talk about dvd backups.
Good guides r available on vcdhelp.com and also seamonkeys site which you shall find in this forum.
