I am currently building a new PC and I recently purchased a Plextor DVD burner (model PX-716A), and while reading through the manual I noticed they have a SATA version also. If I am using SATA hard drives on my new PC, will I need to SATA burner to complement these or is the burner I just bought going to work?

SATA is the serial version of IDE, and is backward compatible.
All falls within the ATA standard.
IDE to SATA, SATA to IDE.
You won't have any problems running SATA Hard drives, whilst your optical devices are IDE.

So the burner I just bought will be compatible with my SATA HD's when I get them? Also, what is the advantage of having a SATA burner to go along with the SATA HD's? Thanks for the help btw.

It's not a case of whether they will be compatible with your HD's, the case is can the motherboard/CPU handle the the instructions back and forth between the 2, the answer is yes, as the controllers (drivers) that will be provided on your motherboard disc, setup/control the communication between the 2.
SATA is becoming more and more popular and is now available on most motherboards as a standard, therefore drivers are becoming more and more solid.
SATA burners are very new, I have not tried one myself, the problem I would say initially is because there are new, and may not be 'properly' road tested yet.
However in theory, if the driver is of a good standard, then I cannot foresee many issues with them, as they are using the ATA standard, just serially driven.
And of course, burning proggies need to be able to communicate with the controllers, the CPU should handle this quite nicley and therefore I can see SATA Burners become more and more popular.

They are using the same interface, so interaction/data collisions are minimised, if not eliminated.
Less chance of noise interference within the PC from transients, however not totally eliminated.
Alot easier to install and tidies up the inside of the PC.
I am waiting for fibre optic to be developed as this will be lighting fast..................

Good Info BaaBaa. Also SATA is 150 so it is good for Hard drive faster than IDE(133). There is no speed advantage at this point in the game to run sata over ide for a burner IDE 66 Will not even slow you down any. So its more preferance for burner, like BaaBaa said depends on your motherboard. Mine has 4 sata connections. Im not paying the extra $ for sata over IDE right now. But I must tell ya this Sata HD Wd-Rapture(10,000rpm) Smokes. Maybe with Blue ray those drives will take advantage of sata speed.

Yeah the raptors are high on my shopping list at the mo', just waiting to see if the prices will drop a little more, the're not all that expensive, but when you compare them to standard IDE or even SATA they are a little dear.........
Nowt like looking for a bargain.............LOL

hi
yes not to expensive but when i need to buy 4 it shows abit heavy!
i want 2 raptors sata 74gigs for OS and 300 sata for bakup may go 400 yet? like saud depends on prices
all 4 on a dual mirror raid system...
Nothing here to see, move along folks.

hi
yes thats the plan anyways...just cant get my hand in the pocket to get cash out hehehe...
i am planning a new system, i have mirror raid now with 2 sata 160drives, it has saved my life once, and i have 1 backup drive but if it goes i loose all info on that single drive, my mobo a7v8x is a single raid...
also just need more gig space keep running out, i am collecting hds got 6 now, only useing 3, will have 10 when i get next 4...
i want a pci express graphic card too 16x but need new mobo and psu too...
Nothing here to see, move along folks.
