divx 5.1 audio jittery over spdif

I have been haveing an ongoing problem with my htpc. Hooked op to my reciver with the analog connectores dvd and divx play in digital no problems. however I would prefer to hook it up using the spdif, because i run an externel decoder and have to un hook it ot use the analog connectores. heres my problem. 2ch audio works great, dvd in both dd and dts work great, 2ch divx and xvids work great, but as soo as I try 5.1 divx the audio jitters. It happens on all divx (they play 5.1 in my philips in the bedroom so I know its not the encoding). At first if thought my pc was getting to slo ( p3 1ghz) so I upgraded to an amd 2000+ with 1gb of ram, and audigy 2, but still no luck. THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING!. Any sugestions would be apreaciated. ( by jittery i do not mean out of sync i mean Jittery)

amd 2000+, 2x512 ddr3200 ram, 1x 120gb maxtor hd, lg dvdrw, audigy 2 oem, ati 9600 video card, windows xp media 04, bs player pro, vlc player ext...
