Hello, I recently purchased a 109 and flashed the firmware to 1.40 ,I am getting intermittent burning failures with nero and dvd decrypter, luckily the burning procedure stops at 1% and doesn't actually burn to dvd. I have tried this burner in 3 pc's and most of the time it failed, then I tried it in a work pc and worked 95% of the time which is really strange, so I took a a09 and a nec 3500 home and tried it in my new machine and they worked fine. I took the 109 back to the shop to test it and guess what! it worked! shop said they can't return it because it worked in their machine, so I bought a 3520 and chucked the 109 back into my new machine and also put the 3520 in there as well and tried to burn a dvd with the 109...it failed... so straight after I used the 3520 with no hassles at all. Here are the logs of 3 burns, 1 with RITEK MEDIA IN NERO, 1 with RECORD MEDIA IN NERO and 1 with RITEK MEDIA IN DVD DECRYPTER.

Hi there,

I didn't see your full Nero log, but is DMA enabled on that burner ?

I also noticed you tryed to burn at 8x, did you try at a lower speed and see if this helps ?

I think when you see this, it didn't like your media, usually it should display the Media ID right people ?

Is v1.40 the latest firmware for that Pioneer 109 ?

cougar_ii: It's at Ultra DMA 4 (66), I haven't bothered with 4x speed, I can try tonight. I thought Ritek suppose to be a good brand? I have used Record media for years on my 105 with no hassles, not one coaster.

squizzle: I really don't know anymore, it's a fresh install of Nero and Win Xp Sp2.

Here's a quote from the Newbies link in my sig:

<11>What is ASPI and do I need it?
The term 'ASPI' is an acronym that stands for: Advanced SCSI Programming Interface. All the following terms are synonymous: ASPI layer, ASPI drivers, ASPI interface. The term 'SCSI' [scuzzy] is an acronym that stands for Small Computer Systems Interface. An ASPI layer consists of four files that 'lie between' various programs [software] and certain devices, such as CD/DVD-ROM drives and CD/DVD burners/writers [hardware]. Software programs such as CD digital audio extractors [commonly known as 'Rippers'] and CD-writing utilities such as CDRWin use/require ASPI drivers to 'communicate with' SCSI devices. Many people don't realize however, that the files contained in an ASPI layer are also used in systems that *don't* contain a SCSI adapter, or SCSI devices .. for things such as ripping CD audio and burning CD/DVDs.

squizzle: err well you'd think XP SP2 would have all the drivers ready to burn dvd's, with the 105 I had a while ago, I've never had any issues with burning dvds, and if it's is the ASPI then why would the A09 and the NEC 3500 & 3520 work??

By the way, this is what was written on http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/#BOOTISO

Adaptec ASPI32 layer for Windows v4.60
The ASPI32 layer for Windows applications that may require it.
Don't use version 4.70 from Adaptec's site. It's a piece of crap!

I don't know too much about it, but I have XP Service Pack 2 and I had a bad ASPI layer installed (for Windows, Nero has its own seperate one). The Adaptec one worked for me.

Nero InfoTools said I had a bad Windows ASPI, after installing the Adaptec one, it said it was good.

Ok well then Nero would of installed the latest one with patch update 6.6.0.12 no? or should I download the latest one from adaptec? Is the 109 more picky with ASPI then the 105, 3520, 3500 and the A09? (even tho the A09 is pretty much the same drive as the 109)

I don't know your setup. You should go into Nero Infotools and check the ASPI layer for Nero and Windows.

I'll check it out tonight once I get home, tho how can I find out on what Nero 6.6.0.12 and XP SP2 should install as default? Would Ahead and Windows have a spec page somewhere because I can't find one.

That's what it looks like when your ASPI is good. Notice the drop-down menu to select system or Nero ASPI. It'll tell you here if your ASPI is bad. Try it and see.

Knowing my luck it will all say it's in working order, I always seem to get the weird A$$ problems, I reckon it's something else at fault because I'm getting these probs before I formatted and after but like I said I will check tonight.

Try this link. It may help sort out the ASPI problem.

Well I had to reformat and it seems I still have issues, this time I just installed ForceASPI and I get intermittent failures but more failures then succesful burns. I reckon the new 109 is shiyt, my 3520 shat all over it, no hassles what so ever.
