Hi Everyone,

I was curious if anyone could help me out. I installed a new 200gig hard drive to my PC (in the F: drive) about a year ago, in addition to my normal C: drive. No problems, nothing. I set the slave/master jumpers correctly. Well, about three weeks ago, after running an AVG virus scan, I noticed the drive was becomming undetected by my Device Manager at times. I'd re-boot, and the drive magically came re-appeared.

Well, today, the drive started chugging very loudly, and now its completely gone. Device Manager doesn't even see the F: drive anymore. I tried accessing it, and an error came up that the drive was corrupted. I re-started, and the next message was "F: drive not formatted. Would you like to format now?" I chose yes, and it said it couldn't format the disk at all.

So... does anyone have any clues? I am accepting the fact that all my important data is forever lost. I checked all the wiring, and even put in my other F: drive, and that worked just fine.

Any ideas would be VERY appreciated!!

THANKS
CHRIS

The LOUD CHUGGING doesn't sound good. My guess is a mechanical breakdown like internal bearings. I would check the drives warranty. If still under warranty the manufacturer may offer to salvage the data during the warranty exchange or repair. But its really up to the company and their warranty policy. Good luck.

Hey-- thanks for the info. However, any suggestions if a warranty has expired? Do I send it somewhere to salvage the data?

Thanks again!

You can find a company that can try to retrieve the data on the drive, but it is doubtful that they will be able to recover all of it, if any.

It will also be expensive.

GrandpaBW is correct. Just do a search for data recovery and several sites should pop up. If it is a mechanical breakdown and the data disc didn't get damaged then you have a good chance of full data recovery. If the disc got damaged because of the breakdown then its anyones guess. Hopefully since you never got the chance to actually format the HD, the data will still be intact.
