Good Day,
I followed Scuba Pete Guide for DMA Transfer. I had My Pioneer set in Ultra DMA But my LG was PIO Transfer. I tried to toggle my setting for my LG drive but it did not work so I Uninstall my drive & then Rebooted like the guide said. That done I went to my Device Manager under Secondary IDE Channel/ Properties/ & My ADVANCED SETTINGS TAB disapeared... How do I get it back so I can check if I'm under DMA ?

Uninstall the drive again in device manager and also the secondary IDE controller. Then reboot. Windows should install both properly if there isn't any other problems.

Others who report that their 'advanced tabs are missing' are saying that they had 'Intel Accelerator' installed on their systems and it was this that was causing the missing tabs issue.
If you have it installed, it maybe worthwhile uninstalling it and see how it goes.

Hi,
Saw this thread and am interested, since I'm having problems burning dual layer data DVDs with Nero on a LG GSA-4163BA burner. Nero tech support say that I have to enable DMA for all my drives, since their utility reports that DMA is off for my SATA drive, my primary master PATA disk, and the secondary master LG burner.
Trouble is, I have installed the Nvidia nforce chipset drivers, and I don't see how to enable DMA with them. Is it possible that the information collected by Nero's infotool is wrong? I mean surely I would notice some horrendous slowdowns if DMA wasn't being used?
Any help much appreciated.
Cheers, Jon.

Hello Baabaa,
Well well, you just answered one of my questions :)
I have a SATA HD, and I did install the Intel Accelerator thinggy.
And yep, the Advanced Tab is not there.
So you raised a good question: Which is better ?
Beeing able to set DMA, or having the Intel Accelerator thinggy.
I currently have v4.5.? (I have a Dell Dimension 8400) and I used the latest one Dell had to offer for my PC.

Personally I have never heard/used that at all, so would be hard to say which would be better.
However thinking about it logically, I would think it could cause issues especially when you're transferring high rates of data.
Basically you are introducing 'another' control aspect within the data transferral process, even though it is supposed to 'speed' things up - the programs 'need' to be able to communicate with each other and 'claim' memory addresses which could cause conflicts and BSODS for there is an element of things going a little astray, therefore the CPU is doing a little more work and also this could have an adverse affects on the interrupts and also the stack overflows.
It would probably be worth running some benchmarks, with it installed and without and see exactly what affects (if any) occur and then deciding on the best course.
From what I read on the net about it, it does appear to cause more harm than good, again this is going to be machine dependent and what works well for one may not work well for others.
I think this issue may begin appearing more frequently so any results you obtain, I am sure it would be worth keeping this thread going for everyones benefit.................
Also I would think that the accelerator would be more beneficial for IDE hard drives, rather than SATA if it was to be used due to the specification of SATA over IDE..........

Hi,
How can I check that DMA is actually being used by my system? The Nvidia IDE/ATA driver (the tab in device manager) says that it is, but whenever I get a fault with Nero and it provides the error log, it says that DMA is off for all my drives!
If I list resources by type under Device manager, and look for DMA, all I see is floppy drive, printer, and DMA controller.
I am really stumped by this problem, so any help will be much appreciated.
Cheers, Jon.

Word !
Ok, I uninstall INTEL ACCELERATOR and Talalalaaa... My ADVANCED SETTINGS Tab came back. Now both my drives are Untra DMA. 1 drive is ULTRA DMA 4 & the other one is ULTRA DMA 2. What is the difference between thos 2 DMA ?

Too be honest it does like the 'Intel Accelerator' is indeed disabling windows ability to control the DMA operation.
So I would have to say that regarding the 'extra controller aspect in there' causing issues, it may in fact not.
But the issue will be can the various programs integrate successfully with the Intel Accelerator.

In Device manager, have you anything listed like IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, if you have expand the tree and then look in advance settings on Primary/Secondary and you should find the DMA setup there.
Also check your BIOS and make sure the IDE section is setup for DMA enabled/auto as the drivers maybe reporting the capabilities rather than their actual setup.

I have this problem too. UDMA2 is the transfer mode shown in device manager for my plextor burner under the "Nvidia nForce3 250 Parallel ATA Controller" device. All disk utilities show the transfer mode as UDMA2. However any of the logs generated by Nero report DMA:OFF. Following tests I have carried out I suspect Nero has got it wrong. My conclusions are that the nvidia drivers and Nero have a compatibility issue however as everything works as it should it is not a serious one and the error in the log is the only evidence of it.

I wish I was in your fortunate position. I am completely unable to copy a dual layer data DVD using Nero. In fact their tech support admits that there is a problem with Nero and Nvidia's IDE driver. They suggested I remove the offending driver and switch back to Intel/Microsoft ones.
Which I did - and it still doesn't F*Ghkin work :(
I can't get it to copy with the trial version of Alcohol 120% either.

Before I noticed the problem with Nero, Nvidia drivers and DMA I did have others problems getting my Plextor burner to work. In fact the problems were so sever I rma'd a perfectly good burner. Anyway it turned out 2 apps I was using were causing my problems. After many hours of testing I found that it was certain software that was causing it. Its a known fact that some burning software just does not interact well with the Nvidia drivers. In my case it was Alchol120% and CloneDVD. I was experiencing lockups and I could only get it to use PIO, then Multi-World 2 ect. The cause was that these apps created virtual drives and added drivers to the plextor which caused the problems. Uninstalling both these apps cured my problem. I just had to find similar apps that worked well with the Nvidia drivers.DVDDecrypter, DVDShrink, Rebuilder+CCE and Nero all work fine for me now.

To cut to the chase, the Intel Application accelerator (IAA) replaces the standard Microsoft ATA drivers. To see the equivalent of the advanced tab, you need to run the IAA as a program which you should be able to do from Start/Programs. This brings up a window called Device Information which has all the DMA info and lots of other stuff. Hope this helps.
