Hi there, I am going away to Uni and want to build a new machine to take with me. Thing is i am on a limited budget being a student and obviously want the best machine i can get but for the leaset amount of money :)

These are the sort of specs that i am looking for:

Either a P4 3.2ghz or equivalant Amd processor if possible.
>
As far as motherbords go I am not to sure about them so whatever you would reccomend.
> Atleast 1 gig of good ram PC 3200
> 2 x 200gig hd
> Radeon 9800 pro
> Creative Labs Soundblaster Audigy 2
> A nice dvd writer ( if you could reccomend one)
> A 17" tft monitor (decent make)
> Justa standard case, not too bothered about that.

Thats just a rough guideline as to what i am looking for

Many thanks

WOW! Sounds like you have a nice budget. How much money are you budgetting for this?? After I hear the amount, then we can give you some idea's on components. ie: my mobo was $178; processor 300, 1GB ram 263, cpu cooler 45, vid card 404, sound card 202, z680 5.1 speakers 250, hard drives totalling almost 300; so, as you see, it adds up fast!!! Let us know.

ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe I875P
3.4 GHz Pentium 4 Northwood
1 GB Kingston
Plextor 716A Dvd-Rw
74 GB WD Raptor SATA HD@10000rpm
200 GB Maxtor HD@7200rpm
GeForce 6800 GT

Hi starbuck1

Well this is what i have been quoted by a local computer company.
1 x MSI K8T Motherboard
2 x 512MB Samsung DDR3200 Memory
2 x Seagate 200GB S-ATA hard drives setup in Raid 0
1 x Connect3d 9800 Pro 128mb Graphics Card
1 x BENQ 17" TFT Monitor
1 x Standard Case
1 x BENQ DVD-RW
1 x 64Bit 3200 S754 Athlon Processor
1 x Creative SB Audigy 2ZS 7.1 sound card
1 x Windows XP Home
1 x Floppy Drive

for the sum of £930

As you can see i am working in pounds. But if i could get something like that for cheaper then thats great.

Thanks

hey kyle
You seem to know what your looking for - if your confident enough to put the machine together yourself i would advise buying components individually to get the best prices.
Couple of sites iv used for comparing prices;
http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/computing/
http://computing.kelkoo.co.uk/b/a/c_110001_computers_software.html
and some online stores;
http://www.overclock.co.uk/customer/home.php
http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/components/
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/home/
Can also google "buy 'name of your component' online" and you'l get various online stores
Keep an eye on delivery prices - some are free some around £5

Hiya haimback, much appreciated mate....I will have a look at those sites and see what sort of prices i am looking at.

Hopefully i can do this thing relatively cheap, otherwise i am going to have to use onboard sound and graphics and just stick with a 200gig hd, till i have the cash to build on.

Cheers

If you're going for upgradeablitly you probably want a socket 939 processor and mobo. It'll cost just a little bit more, the processor price should be the same.
