Hello everyone,

I'm hoping someone here can help me out with a bit of a problem I'm having with an external enclosure + DVD burner setup. I've read through the MANY, MANY pages of information in the other thread about external enclosures but I believe my problem to be different.

I've just purchased a Vantec NexStar 2 5.25 USB2 external enclosure (no firewire) and a Pioneer 109 drive. I'm hooking it up to a Dell Inspiron 8500 via a USB port (Intel 82801DB/DBM controller 24CD).

I'm getting very slow write performance when using Nero 6.6.0.13. Read performance seems to be ok - somewhere around x5 to x10 for DVDs and x20 to x40 for CDs, so I'm ruling out a USB link problem. The controller appears as an "enhanced" controller under Windows device manager.

When burning in Nero I just can't keep the drive's buffer full, it sits at 10% and the burn happens in bursts, I'm guessing as the buffer gets drained from full to 10%. Knowing this it takes a long time to burn a DVD.

The USB chipset in the NexStar 2 is an ALi 5621, so I'm not sure if the issue is there or not (but read performance would indicate that it's fine).

The firmware version in the Pioneer is 1.40

Is there anything else I should look at to speed up the write process?

been here with another guy i searched the net didnt find much except a couple of things on this ALI chip its not good and wherever it was they started a thread to list bugs etc....
