Hi,

I have a Philips DVDR520H and I am told it is identical hardware to the LiteOn 5045...

Is there any way to hack the firmware or something to let it use the LiteOn firmware rather than the philips as the LiteOn has far more features like CD-R burning etc.

Surely it must be possible somehow!

Thanks,

Ian.

Hi Ian
I just downloaded the firmware for that unit and looked into it. It seems to be a little brother to the 5045 kinda like the Ilo hd04. Is there a macrovision off hack for the philips posted anywhere that you know of? It looks to me like it is hackable at least for the macrovision. I made the changes to the firmware to turn off macro but dont have the philips to test it.

As far as I know there is no hack around. I am interested in being able to write to different types of media.

Is the LiteOn firmware very similar and is there anyway to fool the philips firmware into upgrading to the LiteOn firmware as this has all the features that the Philips doesn't have.

One more question... is the firmware stored on an Eeprom, or is it stored on the HDD?

What do you use to hack the firmware?

Cheers,

Ian

The firmware itself is realy simular. The hardware is just enough different to make it a hard task to put liteon firmware on it. I think I remember there is a group of people working on trying to get it done in Netherlands. Sorry dont have a link for you.

It is stored on the eeprom.

I use ultra edit to change hex values

If there is an available firmware update for the Philips, try running the Smart Firmware Hacker on it. If the firmware follows the standard LiteOn programming, the Firmware Hacking Tool should be able to hack it.

Most likely the same as ilo and liteon.
Enter Setup
Move cursor to Exit
With cursor on exit enter 2 9 6 0
Select region or region free

I am thinking of buying one of these units. Can anyone one give me some guidance? Can I edit out the ads after I record a programme from TV and will I be able to record my VHS movies onto a DVD without the macrovision problems.
