i started this thread to address nintnedos revolution o far hearing great ideas from nintendo's e3 press report and hearing there interresting ideas to incorperate the ability to download new and great old school titles but as this system becomes the focus of many unanswered question's as well
like:
1. why would you want to download and pay around 5.00 to 50.00 for a five to ten year old game when you could purchase the game for 5.00 to ten dollers from your local used game store
2.although they may think that piracy isn't a option on this console i know that hackers and several mod chip manufactures are ready to try to hack the console once it comes out
3.and we have all heard nintendo's speech before about how secure there media is(yea right about as secure as a cockroach)take a look at nintendo's ds which says on the back ra secured but yet was hacked cracked and mad illegal copy's of just five weeks after its realease
so after all of this i would like to know what is the draw for me to buy or even think about revolution if people are going to hack crack and mod a console to avoid everyhing
and why would i want to purchase old school games and pay for them all over again when i could just puchase the console at the local thrift store with tons of games and be happy
so nintendo hats of to you for creating the most easyiest consoles to hack crack mod and cheat on but after all of that keep up the good work

I think that the thing about downloading and playing old school games for a minimum price indeed is very good, I think people is not going to go and buy Another console and buy games while you can dowload them and play them on the go, I will personally prefer that instead of changing consoles and buying games for them, about piracy what is the problem if they Mod the console I will personally do that so I can play my "backups", I dont see a problem of buying the console if it can be modded what is the problem about that???
I think nintendo revolution will be a good console and if It adds a good game library I will think on buying it.....

I don't think nintendo will charge much if anything at all for the SNES and NES games. They might charge a bit for the n64 games though. They might have certain games free, and others you would have to pay for.

I don't know why you think nintendo will be the only console hacked. Someone will definately hack ps3 and xbox 360. No doubt about that. With all these new features for each console like internet and different format discs that are compatible then definately people will try to hack them.

I don't think it matters what console comes out and when. Someone will ALWAYS find a way to hack it and mod it. it's inevitible. Dreamcast wasn't suppose to be able to be hacked because of it's *un-hackable GD-ROM technology* The fact that nothing can read a GD-ROM except a dreamcast or GD-ROM drive was Sega's brand of security. But it was cracked. Then you have Nintendo's G.O.D. I HONESTLY thought Nintendo had the upper hand with Gamecube...that console couldn't be hacked in my mind. And it was. Personally, I own 2 modded consoles and I love it! I think the retro-games on new consoles is clever. OBVIOUSLY everyone else thinks that as well! What I think? Nintendo sees that and decides to TRY and get in that kind of the market *legally*. PROFESSIONAL coders instead of *hobbists*. FULL SPEED emulation that is PERFECT would sell better than a hobbist attempt with 40% sound 90% speed. Personally, I'd never pay to download it. Simply because whatever Nintendo's method of emulation will be, it is going to be duplicated, and then ran on the revolution. So I'll just wait for that time to come. I have ALWAYS bought and trusted Nintendo because they're games have always been GENUINELY fun! However, my vote is still going towards the PS3. Unless Nintendo comes out with something REALLY revolutionary...my $300.00+ dollars will be headed STRIAIGHT to the PS3 on open day.

Yeah nintendo knows whats going on. They know about all the emulators out there for their past consoles. I actually seen it in a magazine....egm or something saying that emulation is getting popular. So I can see why nintendo is taking this approach. And I think its a pretty good idea for nintendo to do. But I also agree with coldasice...if nintendo is not revolutionary I'm definately going with the PS3. The only games I'm looking forward to on nintendo is the online smash bros. I know thats gonna be awesome.... and other then that they really didn't reveal jack shit except a prototype of the console...so I'm really not that pumped up for it.

im guessing the reason they have concealed all of their specs and new way of controlling games is so that sony wont copy their ideas as the XBox 360 is pretty much complete, i believe PSPs Wi-Fi function came from the DS (not 100% sure).
I wudnt knock nintendo yet until they reveal everything about it

Look, Nintendo is doing the right thing in giving the Revolution emulators for past consoles.
Its better than hacking it and nintendo will assure the quality of the games, and why do you even think Nintendo will charge for games?
There is no fee for the wi-fi online capabilities, so downloading should be free too.

if the Revolution can do emulation really well, i'd cosider getting one, but i hear that the XB can do emu really well already. seems to me that all i would need to do is go find XB for sale real cheap and get my friend to help me mod it. i noticed that they didnt mention gba. that's probly cuz they're still making millions on sales, and there will be no more NES, SNES or N64 games coming out. at the end of it all, i'd still consider getting a revolution if it really called out to me, but for now i'm thinking about the ps3.

In response to johnodd4's comments, I say this: 1. I may want to play an older game once in a while. If the game is a classic, people are likely to play it if for no other reason but the nostalgia factor? People still play Pacman don't they, and its old. Second, as Blade_x1 pointed out, the older games published by Nintendo will be free. Games from other publishers will be cheap as well. I would not go to a sore and buy a used console because I would only take it out once every two months when I decided on a whim to play "Super Mario Bros." The rest of the time it would sit in my entertainment center collecting dust.
2. Nintendo's copy protection security has always been amongst the best out there. When all the other console makers were switching to CD technology, Nintendo was intelligent enough to stick with cartridges. Nintendo cartridges were uncrackable until a few years ago. Even the Gamecube has good security. It's secret has been uncovered, that's true. However, the process is far to technical and much to expensive to be preformed by the average gamer. Xbox and Playstation 2 secrets were cracked much quicker.
3. If Nintendo DS's wi-fi internet capabilities are also on the console for free, along with a couple of good internet playable games, I would be putting my money into a Nintendo console.
So I ask any PS2 and Xbox junkies to think before you post. Every advantage you can think of for Microsoft and Sony in the console race, I can match with an advantage for Nintendo.

Grant you, Nintendo's protection is to aplaud. HOWEVER, all of nintendo's carts have been cracked in under a year after they were released. I've been downloading Nintendo cartridge based games when the internet was just becoming a *thing*. And I am the average gamer. Ripping and streaming gamecube games is cake. Finding the programs is the only difficult part. Only requires you not to be lazy and that is about the extent of it. My 11yo sister rips and streams games for me all the time. The neglect to learn via the trouble of obtaining the knowledge (AKA: Being lazy)isn't an excuse to not learn at all. Expensive? $40.00 MAX.
I'm a veteran gamer myself. So to see the old games on a new console....will be good so long as they aren't the source entertainment of the system.

Are you trying to call me lazy? I'll ignore it. I do agree with you on your last point about classic games not being only entertainment, though.

The only reason why Xbox can emulate is because its a PC! common sense, its a Microsoft product... which is why I would NEVER ever concider getting one. Eventhough you can run every type of PC product on Xbox, I will stick with Nintendo since they have the best service, games, and have been around for the past 20 years and plan to be around for at least another 30. We all know that Japan is far more advanced and already has the PS3 selling millions... but what most people don't know, is that the new Revolution system has already sold billions and thats just in the first 6 months it was released over there. Just face it, Nintendo is the best way to go, not just because of the brand names, but because it is the best form of entertainment. I don't know where you people get that it will be over $200, and even if it was (which it isn't) I would rather buy that than the new Xbox which isn't much better than the last one. The only thing that makes a system good is the graphics and the games, and now that Nintendo teamed up with Apple (not a rumor), you all know damn well they will be the best! go Nintendo!

Xbox isn't meant to be a PC. If it was, Bill Gates would've included Windows XP and an internet browser out of the box. Plus, if the Xbox is emulating Nintendo and Sony games, it's illegal. Microsoft doesn't have the rights to those games. I'm sure that the only Xboxes able to emulate games are modded.

actually they are far from moded, and yes you can put a internet browser and xp on it if you really wanted to, but that would be stupid. I think its time that Microsoft dies.

blinkguy,
none of those systems ahve been released to retail yet, so I am not sure where you got the numbers for that.
The first Xbox was a bunch of off the shelf parts modded to fit in an ugly black and green case. Heck Xbox runs on windows ce for petes sake!!
Thats why I never bought one. I can take a old P3 running at 900 mhz, throw a 20gb hdd on and format it with Xbox's software (softmod) and make the PC think it is an Xbox. Its not worth it now since you can get one at a pawn shop for less than $100. You can then partition the hdd and throw windows XP on it if you wish and use it as a home pc, as well as a game system. BUt the fact still remains that the fiorst xbox was just a PC in a box running low grade windows.
NOW
If you want to talk about the new systems..... The new xbox is being designed as a game system. They had more time this time, so its not JUST a PC, and NO you couldnt just build your own with regular PC parts. But Sony (who I hate just a tad less then Microsoft) will have this next round cornered!
And most people that buy either system Xbox or PS3 will prolly buy a revolution because it will be cheap, it will play all the old games you were brought up on, it will play the odd (1 or 2) good games that are made for the revolution, and you wont feel bad letting your kids play it. DId I mention it will be cheap? (comparitavely)
Right now I just run my PS2 with snes, nintendo, genesis, sega, TG16 emulators when I want nastalga. And I turn on hddloader and play one of the 50+ games I have on the hdd when I want to play a ps2 game.

There are going to be more than one or two good games on the Revolution. The Metroid, Zelda, and Mario franchises will all have new titles. Couple that with the fact that Grand Theft Auto and Viewtiful Joe should have new titles for the Revolution (now that GTA is going to have a title for the Gamecube) you've got a good lineup.

....like I said " a couple of good games"
I dont look forward to the zelda series, and GTA is good for 30 minutes of excitement, then it gets boring shooting people.
Mario games are good. All I ever played on N64 was mario64 and mario cart.

I own every console, and every version of every console since the Atari 2600 to NEO GEO to XBOX, PS2, and NGC. I've just bought the PSP and DS 2 and 3 weeks ago, respectively. I've hacked into both and honestly, neither is like hacking into the XBOX and PS2.
I think the best way of forcasting a systems survival is to look at the money trail. I bought an XBOX to play Metal Slug and because I could mod it to play emulators. I bought a PS2 to play DDR, which I have now just downloaded onto my XBOX. But, I own 70 NGC titles. I admit, most may not be the best games ever made, but since I bought Animal Crossing over a year ago, I have not been able to go one single day without playing it.
So when it comes down to it is, who really gets the money? XBOX? They haven't made a profit from me yet. PS2? They've made very little profit from me. NGC? I guess the thousands of dollars I've spent on NGC stuff doesn't matter much. (sarcastically)
But you "fps" gamers shouldn't count N out. Remember, they have a successful money trail in loyal gamers like me.
